Over the past 26 years, the high school graduation exam has undergone many changes in terms of the number of subjects and the format of the exam, moving towards reducing exam pressure while maintaining reliable and effective results.

The high school graduation exam consisted of four subjects until 1994, with two compulsory and two elective subjects. Later, the number of subjects was increased to five. In 1998, the exam officially included six subjects.

Period 1998-1999: Graduated from high school and specialized high school with 6 exam subjects.

The 1998 high school graduation exam marked the first year that the exam included six subjects: three compulsory subjects ( mathematics , literature , and foreign language) and three subjects that changed annually, selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from physics , chemistry , biology , history , and geography for the high school system. The changed subjects were announced after March 31st each year.

For specialized high school programs, the three compulsory subjects are mathematics , literature , and a foreign language , while the remaining three subjects are specific to each program. Specifically, the natural science -engineering program includes physics , chemistry , and biology ; the social science-humanities program includes history , geography , and philosophy. The graduation exam is held twice a year (the first in early June and the second in August).

Exam format: Essay. The exam is organized by the Department of Education and Training with the purpose of assessing high school graduation.

The 1999 high school graduation exam was organized similarly to the 1998 exam.

During the period 2000-2013, the exam was called the high school graduation exam. There were 6 subjects, including 3 compulsory subjects: mathematics , literature , and a foreign language , and 3 subjects that changed each year, selected by the Ministry of Education and Training from physics , chemistry , biology , history , and geography ; announced on March 31st.

The exam, administered by the Department of Education and Training, aims to assess high school graduation and is primarily held once. However, in 2007 and 2008, a second exam was held in August to provide an opportunity for students who had not yet graduated to pass the high school graduation exam.

The exam is held once a year, at the beginning of June. The exam format is essay-based, with some subjects such as foreign languages , physics , chemistry , and biology being multiple-choice.

2014: Graduation exam consisted of 4 subjects, 2 compulsory and 2 elective.

The year 2014 marked the first exam with reduced pressure, in line with Resolution No. 29-NQ/TW dated November 4, 2013, on fundamental and comprehensive educational reform. The exam consisted of four subjects: two compulsory subjects ( mathematics and literature) and two elective subjects ( physics , chemistry , biology , history , and geography) .

Across the country, there are examination clusters organized by universities for the purpose of assessing high school graduation and university/college admissions; and examination clusters organized by the Departments of Education and Training for the purpose of assessing high school graduation. The number of examination clusters organized by universities in 2015 was 38 and in 2016 it was 70.

Mathematics , literature , history , and geography exams are essay-based, while foreign languages , physics , chemistry , and biology exams are multiple-choice.

Period 2017-2019: National High School Graduation Examination, 4 subjects.

During the period 2017-2019, the national high school graduation exam continued but with some changes. Specifically, candidates took four exams: three compulsory subjects ( mathematics , literature , and a foreign language) and one elective subject chosen from either the natural sciences ( physics , chemistry , biology ) or social sciences (history, geography, civics). Of these, only the literature exam was essay-based; the remaining subjects were multiple-choice.

The exam is organized by the Department of Education and Training (each province has one examination board with multiple examination centers), with universities and colleges providing support, supervision, and grading.

Purpose of the exam: To graduate from high school and for university/college admission.

The 2018 exam saw unprecedented cheating scandals in three provinces: Ha Giang , Son La, and Hoa Binh, causing a public outcry.

During the period 2020-2023, the first high school graduation exam was conducted according to the 2019 Education Law, called the High School Graduation Exam. Candidates took four exams: three compulsory subjects (mathematics, literature, and a foreign language) and one elective subject, chosen from either the natural sciences ( physics , chemistry , biology ) or social sciences (history, geography, civics). Only the literature exam was essay-based; the remaining subjects were multiple-choice.

The exam is organized by the Department of Education and Training (each province has one examination board with multiple examination centers), and universities and colleges participate in inspections as part of the inspection team from the Ministry of Education and Training.

The main purpose of the exam is to graduate from high school; universities and colleges can use the graduation exam results for admissions according to their respective admission plans.

The 2024 high school graduation exam is expected to be similar to the 2023 exam. In recent years, the high school graduation exam has been reformed to reduce pressure and costs for society.
