Recently, a new form of online fraud has emerged: deepfake video calls. Deepfake is a combination of deep learning and fake. Perpetrators use artificial intelligence (AI) technology to create fake videos or images, copying portraits to create fake videos of relatives or friends to make online scam calls.

5 ways to identify deepfake video scam calls

A fleeting call, flickering images and sound, unnatural eye movements, and an unnatural facial expression are all signs of a deepfake. (Illustrative image)

The majority of these online scams target finances. Therefore, the Cybersecurity Agency has provided five identifying signs:

- Call durations are usually very short, only a few seconds.

- The caller's face lacks emotion and is quite expressionless when speaking, or their posture looks awkward and unnatural, or their head and body orientation in the video are inconsistent...

- The character's skin tone in the video is unusual, the lighting is strange, and the shadows are misplaced, making the video look very artificial and unnatural.

- The audio will not match the video; there will be extraneous noise in the clip, or the clip may have no sound at all.

- Hanging up mid-call due to loss of signal, weak signal, etc.

Therefore, noticing unusual elements such as call duration, facial features, skin color, sound, or poor connection are all signs of a deepfake. People need to be vigilant and remain calm, and double-check the information. Multiple solutions are needed, such as technology to identify fraudulent calls, restricting bank accounts registered under false names, and standardizing subscriber information.

The Ministry of Information and Communications advises that, while awaiting technical solutions to completely eradicate these forms of abuse, people should remain vigilant and absolutely calm.
