AMD surpasses Intel in server sector

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/02/2025

According to Tom'sHardware , AMD's Q4 2024 revenue report reached $7.7 billion, up 24% year-over-year. Gross profit margin reached 51%, while operating profit increased 155% to $871 million. However, net profit decreased 28% to $482 million.

The biggest highlight of the financial results this time is the breakthrough growth of the server CPU segment. Revenue from the data center segment, including EPYC processors and AI (artificial intelligence) accelerators, reached a record $ 3.9 billion, up 69% compared to the fourth quarter of 2023. This is the first time AMD has surpassed Intel in server CPU revenue, while Intel's data center and AI segment recorded only $ 3.4 billion, with an operating profit of $ 200 million.

AMD EPYC processors are designed specifically for server systems and data centers, playing an important role in the company's revenue growth.

In addition to the server segment, AMD also saw strong growth in its PC CPU division. Revenue from this division reached $2.31 billion, up 58% year-over-year. Notably, operating profit from this division jumped 711% to $446 million.

Not all of AMD’s businesses performed well, however. Gaming revenue fell 59% to $563 million, largely due to weak demand for Radeon GPUs and system-on-chips for Xbox and PlayStation. Operating profit for the segment fell 78% to just $50 million.

AMD's embedded systems business also declined, with revenue down 13% to $923 million, while operating profit fell 21% to $362 million.

Despite the challenges in some areas, AMD forecasts revenue of $6.8 billion to $7.4 billion for the first quarter of 2025, up from $5.4 billion in the same period last year. The company expects continued growth in sales of its EPYC chips and Instinct AI accelerators, and aims to improve margins in 2025.

Despite the milestone in server CPUs, AMD shares fell more than 8% after the financial results were released, as investors worried about AI revenue and competition with Nvidia, reflecting the challenges AMD faces in the technology race with major rivals.
