During the resistance war against French colonialism, Comrade Sung Dung Lu made many contributions to building the militia, suppressing bandits and eliminating traitors, and protecting the local area.

Since 1959, as the head of the militia in Van Chai commune, he has upheld a strong sense of responsibility and, together with local officials, achieved good results in building a strong militia force, expanding it from 18 to 47 members. This force is of good quality, well-trained, highly ready for combat, and regularly operates to ensure the safety of the village and commune, contributing to strengthening security and national defense in the border region.

Leading the way in implementing the policy of combining production with military training, Comrade Sung Dung Lu encouraged and motivated the militia movement to both excel in production and fully participate in political education and military training.

In November 1959, 38 bandits arrived in Van Chai commune. They killed people, robbed property, and then settled in the commune, spreading propaganda slandering the regime and distorting the policies of the Party and Government . Many families fled into the forest in fear, and the commune's authorities were controlled by the bandits.

Faced with this situation, Comrade Sung Dung Lu commanded a number of militiamen who resolutely stayed behind to monitor the bandits' activities, then secretly went to the district to report and guide the troops back to coordinate with the militia in eliminating the bandits. Afterwards, he went into the forest to persuade the families to return to their villages to make a living.

Vang Van Ly, the leader of the bandit gang, escaped. Because Ly had committed many crimes against the people and was still secretly engaging in counter-revolutionary activities, the district military command assigned Comrade Sung Dung Lu the task of eliminating Vang Van Ly by any means necessary.

For half a month, the comrade infiltrated the forest, tracking and searching for enemy tracks, while persistently working with Ly's wife and daughter-in-law, explaining the Party's guidelines and policies to Ly's family, thereby helping them locate his hiding place.

Upon learning that Ly was hiding in a cave on Mount Sao Ha, Comrade Sung Dung Lu ordered the militia to surround the cave to eliminate him quickly and decisively. Believing that justice would prevail, he decided to go into the cave alone to persuade the bandit leader. At first, Ly was very stubborn and intended to kill Comrade Sung Dung Lu.

But after witnessing Sung Dung Lu's persistent, calm, fearless attitude and his persuasive explanations, Ly understood the reason and led three other bandits to surrender, handing over seven rifles and some ammunition. From then on, the village was peaceful, the people were relieved and happy, and they returned to their village to work.

In addition to his combat achievements, Sung Dung Lu was also a model of exemplary adherence to all policies and guidelines of the Party and the State, actively encouraging people of various ethnic groups to unite and work collectively in cooperatives.

Comrade Sung Dung Lu was a respected figure among the people in the commune, exemplary in all his work, contributing to building unity among ethnic groups in the locality. He spearheaded the entire commune in implementing the policy of settled farming and resettlement, bringing the Mong people down to lowlands for production, applying farming experiences from people in the lowlands, and increasing rice yields. Thanks to following Comrade Sung Dung Lu's example, the people's lives became more prosperous, and Van Chai commune no longer had to buy rice from the State (before 1963, the commune bought more than 6 tons of rice from the State each year to alleviate famine).

Comrade Sùng Dúng Lù was awarded many prestigious medals and decorations by the Party and the State, including one Third-Class Military Merit Medal.

On January 1, 1967, Comrade Sung Dung Lu was awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President of Vietnam .
