These days, along National Highway 4D, in the section passing through Coc San commune, it's easy to spot sheds sheltering orchid gardens erected on both sides of the road, creating a vibrant and lively scene. Due to the unique climate of the highlands, where severe cold spells and frost last for extended periods, every year as Tet approaches, the people of Sa Pa and Ta Phin are busy moving their potted orchids down to lower areas to protect them from the cold, in preparation for the Tet flower season. Before transporting the orchids to lower areas, the villagers meticulously inspect each pot, remove damaged leaves, and secure the stems to minimize damage during transportation. Orchids are carefully "packed" with string or tape to prevent damage during transportation. Local authorities in Sa Pa and Ta Phin have also proactively supported and encouraged people to move orchids to lower areas to avoid the cold. At the same time, relevant agencies have sent a document requesting the Coc San commune to cooperate and create favorable conditions for people to erect shelters in the area.
Locals are working together to load orchids onto trucks and pickup trucks, preparing for their "migration" to lower areas. Trucks lined up one after another, descending the mountain, carrying hundreds of pots of orchids – the culmination of a year of hard work and care, along with hopes for a bountiful harvest and favorable prices during the Lunar New Year season. The orchid was transported to the collection point. Locals erect shelters to protect the flowers from frost and severe cold, ensuring that the potted orchids remain safe and maintain their best quality.
At collection points in low-lying areas, the orchids are neatly arranged and placed in greenhouses or sheltered areas for continued care and temperature adjustment. After the long journey, the locals continue to care for each potted flower, watering them, checking the humidity and light levels, helping the plants stabilize quickly and ensuring the buds bloom at the right time, ready for the Lunar New Year season. The households wrap the orchid buds to control the blooming time, and also secure the orchid branches to give the plant the most beautiful "shape". Thanks to proactive measures to prevent cold-related damage, many orchid gardens have ensured both the quantity and quality of their produce, ready to meet the demand for flowers during Tet (Lunar New Year) from people inside and outside the province.
The plump, healthy orchid buds are a promising sign, heralding a bountiful and promising Lunar New Year flower season for growers.
