According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is aiming to launch smart glasses by the end of 2026 as part of its efforts to promote AI-enhanced devices. However, Apple has halted plans to develop a smartwatch version that could analyze its surroundings using an integrated camera.
Specifically, Gurman, citing internal sources, revealed that Apple engineers are accelerating work on smart glasses to compete with Meta's Ray-Ban, aiming to meet a 2026 deadline. Until then, Apple is expected to begin mass production of prototypes later this year with overseas suppliers.
The source also revealed that Apple's smart glasses will integrate cameras, microphones, and speakers, allowing them to analyze the outside world and receive requests through the Siri virtual voice assistant. The device can also handle tasks such as making phone calls, playing music, live translation, and step-by-step directions.
According to Gurman, this approach will be similar to Meta's Ray-Ban sunglasses and the upcoming devices running Alphabet's Android XR operating system – Google's parent company.
Despite the promising plans, sources within Apple remain concerned that the company's AI failures could undermine the new product.
Meta's Ray-Ban glasses and the upcoming generation of Android-powered smart glasses benefit from the power of the Llama (Meta) and Gemini (Google) artificial intelligence platforms. Meanwhile, Apple currently still relies on Google Lens and OpenAI to analyze the real world through the iPhone's Visual Intelligence feature.
