According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple is aiming to launch smart glasses by the end of 2026 as part of its push into AI-enhanced devices. However, the company has discontinued plans to develop a version of the smartwatch that can analyze its surroundings using a built-in camera.
Specifically, Gurman cited internal sources revealing that Apple engineers are accelerating work on smart glasses to compete with Meta's Ray-Ban glasses to meet the target by the end of 2026. Until now, Apple is expected to start mass production of prototypes later this year with overseas suppliers.
The source also revealed that Apple's smart glasses will have built-in cameras, microphones and speakers, allowing them to analyze the outside world and take requests through the virtual voice assistant Siri. The device can also handle tasks such as making phone calls, playing music, live translation and turn-by-turn directions.
According to Gurman, this approach will be similar to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses and upcoming devices running Alphabet's Android XR operating system - Google's parent company.
Despite the promising plans, sources inside Apple are concerned that the company's AI failures could undermine the new product.
Meta's Ray-Bans and the upcoming generation of Android-powered smart glasses benefit from the power of Meta's Llama and Google's Gemini artificial intelligence platforms. Meanwhile, Apple currently relies on Google Lens and OpenAI to analyze the real world through the iPhone's Visual Intelligence feature.
