According to Nikkei Asia , Apple has asked its suppliers to prepare to produce around 10 million foldable iPhones this year, an increase from the forecast of around 7-8 million a few months ago.
The company has pre-ordered components and parts for a total of 80 million iPhones set to launch in the second half of 2026, including the iPhone Pro, iPhone Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone, possibly named iPhone Ultra.
iPhone production in 2026, including both existing and upcoming models, will far exceed 220 million units, because Apple has greater negotiating power than most competitors in sourcing memory and components.
According to Nikkei Asia , Chinese smartphone brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have all cut production to below 100 million units for the entire year, mainly due to a severe shortage of memory and electronic components.
In addition, the price of the iPhone Ultra is also noteworthy. According to 9to5mac , IDC previously predicted that the iPhone Ultra would have an average price of $2,500 , with larger storage options costing up to $3,000 . For comparison, the most expensive iPhone currently available costs a maximum of around $2,000 .
Apple is expected to launch the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra in September. A foldable iPhone may reach consumers after the iPhone 18 Pro models, although it is still expected to be available this year.
Meanwhile, it's highly likely Apple won't introduce the iPhone 18 this year. This would extend the iPhone 17's market lifespan from the usual 12 months to around 18 months. Similarly, Apple will also upgrade the iPhone Air with a new version in early 2027.
