Apple has decided to cancel the clamshell-style foldable iPhone project in its early stages. Internal company discussions revealed that this design wouldn't offer significant technological breakthroughs. Instead, the company is focusing its efforts on developing a premium, original foldable iPhone, which is expected to launch alongside future Pro models.

Apple considered a clamshell design for a long time, similar to the modern flip phones on the market. The initial idea for this phone was to fold vertically to create a compact device that would easily fit in a pocket or small bag.

In its early stages of development, the device was expected to become a direct competitor to popular product lines such as Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip.

Initially, the company believed the product had the potential to attract a large number of users who wanted a stylish device without having to carry around an oversized foldable phone.

However, during a detailed evaluation of the project, Apple faced numerous challenges. They identified unavoidable weaknesses in the clamshell design, including reduced battery life, limitations in camera hardware, and screen durability. These factors were deemed to significantly degrade the overall user experience.

Folding the phone in half significantly reduces the internal component space.
