Spreading the spirit of healthcare

(PLVN) - Tomorrow (April 7th), for the first time in Vietnam's history, we will have "National Health Day". Prior to this, Resolution 72-NQ/TW of the Politburo, issued in September 2025, "on some breakthrough solutions to strengthen the protection, care, and improvement of people's health," decided to designate April 7th annually as National Health Day. 2026 is the first year of implementation, and relevant agencies are launching a movement with the theme "Proactive disease prevention - For a healthy Vietnam".

For over 50 years since the country emerged from war, and over 40 years since economic and social reforms, the country has become increasingly modern and developed, and people's lives have improved significantly. No one suffers from hunger or cold anymore; everyone is striving for a prosperous and happy life. But above all, no matter how developed or wealthy we become, if we lack good health, everything else is meaningless. Each of us must first and foremost be healthy, both physically and mentally, in order to live well, work well, study well, and contribute to society.

On National Health Day, we reaffirm our shift in thinking from treating diseases to proactively preventing them. Human life is facing a number of challenges such as the increase in non-communicable diseases, an aging population, climate change, the risk of new epidemics, mental health issues, and nutrition. Therefore, disease prevention is the responsibility of the entire society and of each and every one of us.

When each of us proactively protects our health through a scientific lifestyle, proper nutrition, ensuring food safety, limiting alcohol consumption, exercising regularly, maintaining a green, clean, and beautiful living environment, having beautiful and good life philosophies, knowing how to control and minimize anger, and avoiding toxic relationships… then our lives will certainly be better, more meaningful, and we will make more positive contributions to others and to society. Otherwise, we will pay a huge price, not only in wasted time, but also in expenses, pain, illness, and a decline in quality of life.

For authorities, proactive disease prevention is not only a medical solution but also a requirement for national development. Therefore, the orientation must be to raise awareness throughout society about proactive disease prevention; build and strongly spread the health care movement throughout society; focus on developing preventive medicine and primary healthcare, ensuring that all citizens have access to quality, timely, and convenient primary healthcare services… to transform proactive disease prevention into a habit, a conscious awareness, and a civilized way of life for each individual.

On National Health Day, we reflect once again on a fundamental principle of life: Thousands of years ago and thousands of years from now, everyone has the same amount of time. Therefore, we need to use our time effectively, dedicating it to caring for both our physical and mental health; to live a healthy life, one that is not wasted and is beneficial to society.
