Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, citing internal Apple sources, revealed that the company is about to undergo the biggest software overhaul in its history.
Specifically, Apple will fundamentally change the appearance of its operating systems on iPhones, iPads, and Macs. Sources reveal that the update will make Apple's various software platforms look more consistent, including the style of icons, menus, applications, windows, and system buttons.
"Currently, macOS, iOS, and visionOS have different apps, icons, and window styles. This makes switching between devices frustrating," wrote the Bloomberg reporter.
Additionally, the iPhone manufacturer is also looking to simplify how users navigate and control the device based on Vision Pro's software design.
Unlike iOS and macOS, VisionOS uses circular app icons, simplified windows, and a translucent panel for navigation. The company makes greater use of 3D depth and shadows.
According to Gurman, the changes will come in the iOS 19, iPadOS 19, and macOS 16 updates. The software will mark the biggest upgrade for Macs since the Big Sur operating system launched in 2020. Meanwhile, for iPhones, this will be the biggest overhaul since iOS 7 in 2013.
Alan Dye, head of software and user interface design, will oversee this major software upgrade. He was promoted to the new position in 2019 following Jony Ive's departure.
