Apple Maps is the default map and navigation app on iOS, but many users still prefer Google Maps because they are already familiar with it. PhoneArena suggests that Apple's efforts to refresh the software have narrowed the gap between the two apps considerably.
Specifically, writer Alan Friedman expressed excitement about iOS 18, which added a note-taking feature to Apple Maps. This feature is not available to users of Google Maps.
This isn't a tool Apple has heavily promoted. To access it, while viewing directions to a location, users will see a circular button with a plus sign icon. Tapping it will bring up a new section with the text "Add a note".
After tapping, the app will take the user to a section where they can write down what they want to remember about the location being shown directions to. Friedman gives an example of how this feature is very useful when users can remind themselves while driving to a restaurant that "has good food and reasonable prices." To increase security, only the person using the device to write the note will be able to see it.
In 2012, Apple released the Apple Maps app to compete with Google Maps in iOS 6. However, the software quickly failed because its competitor's app was highly rated by users.
Compared to Google Maps, Apple Maps' strength lies in its seamless integration within the company's device ecosystem. For Apple Watch users, Maps connects more quickly to the watch, providing step-by-step directions, while Google Maps sometimes encounters errors.
In early 2024, users began seeing vehicles labeled "Image collected for Apple Maps" appearing in Ho Chi Minh City. This indicates that Apple is expanding its map data and street imagery to make maps in Vietnam more accurate.
