Apple Maps is the default mapping and navigation app on iOS, but many users still prefer Google Maps because they are familiar with this tool. PhoneArena believes that Apple's efforts to refresh the software have made the gap between the two apps extremely narrow.

Specifically, writer Alan Friedman is excited about iOS 18, the company added a note-taking feature to Apple Maps. A function that Google Maps also does not provide to users.

This isn't the tool Apple has been promoting. To access it, when you're looking at directions to a location, you'll see a circular button with a plus symbol. Tap it, and a new section will appear that says "Add a note."

Once tapped, the app takes users to a section where they can write down notes about the location they’re looking for directions to. Friedman said this feature would be useful for reminding themselves while driving to a certain restaurant that “has good food and reasonable prices.” For added security, only the person using the device to write the note can see it.

In 2012, Apple released the Apple Maps application to compete with Google Maps in iOS 6. However, the software quickly failed because the competitor's app was highly appreciated by users.

Compared to Google Maps, Apple Maps' strength is its integration into the company's device ecosystem. For Apple Watch users, Maps connects faster to the watch, providing turn-by-turn directions, while Google Maps sometimes has errors.

In early 2024, users began to see vehicles labeled "Collecting images for Apple Maps" appearing in Ho Chi Minh City. This shows that Apple is expanding its map data and street images to make maps in Vietnam more accurate.
