This is the first time WPC has held an off-cycle meeting in Beijing, marking a significant milestone in the development of the next-generation Qi standard, promising faster, safer, and more reliable wireless charging. With over 300 member companies and more than 13,000 Qi-certified products, WPC plays a crucial role in ensuring compatibility between brands.
The recent meeting brought together over 20 companies from various sectors of the wireless charging ecosystem, including major players such as OPPO, Huawei, Honor, vivo, Anker, Panasonic Automotive Systems, Philips, NXP, and Dolby Laboratories. Discussions focused on three main areas: finalizing the technical direction of the 50W Qi specification, testing prototype hardware, and verifying compatibility between devices.
The importance of a common wireless charging standard.
Xiaomi has proposed adopting a "small, low-voltage, high-power inductor" architecture into the new standard to reduce energy loss, improve heat dissipation, and enable thinner smartphone designs.
In reality, although the Qi 50W specifications are still under development and expected to be finalized in 2028, smartphone manufacturers have already reached this power level. OnePlus and OPPO have commercialized 50W wireless charging technology on their high-end devices, while Xiaomi has also introduced similar technology. However, the drawback is that these solutions remain proprietary, requiring users to use compatible chargers and accessories from the same manufacturer.
The 50W Qi standard could make a significant difference by providing a common, reliably compatible solution across multiple brands, while maintaining high safety and compatibility standards. If Apple, Google, Xiaomi, and other WPC members can agree on a common specification, users could benefit from faster wireless charging without being tied to a single ecosystem. A common 50W standard would allow users to purchase just one compatible charger to work effectively across a wide range of devices, regardless of the phone's brand.
