According to Italian media, Cole is likely to manage Cesena, a team playing in Serie B. If the deal is finalized, this will be the first time the former England international has taken on the role of head coach in his career, and also his first experience managing abroad.
The decision to appoint Cole comes as Cesena have just sacked coach Michele Mignani following a series of disappointing results. The team is currently 8th in Serie B, a position that qualifies them for the play-offs for promotion to Serie A.
Although he has never been a head coach, Cole is no stranger to coaching. After retiring from playing, the former star accumulated a wealth of experience as an assistant to his former teammate Frank Lampard at Chelsea and Everton, and also worked at Derby County.
Additionally, Cole also served on the England coaching staff during Lee Carsley's interim tenure as manager.
If Cole takes over Cesena, he will face a major challenge in his first season. The gap between Cesena and the leading group is still quite large, with fourth-placed Palermo 17 points ahead.
If all the formalities are completed, Cesena fans could witness Cole's debut on the coaching bench in the match against US Catanzaro 1929 next weekend.
During his playing career, Cole made 107 appearances for England, and is considered one of the best left-backs in English history.
