Atletico Madrid have escalated tensions with Barcelona by confirming they will file a complaint with FIFA regarding Julian Alvarez's case. This move comes just hours after the Argentine striker publicly expressed his desire to leave the Metropolitano Stadium to pursue his "dream."
According to Miguel Angel Gil Marin, CEO of Atletico Madrid, the Spanish capital club believes that Barcelona negotiated with Alvarez while the player was still under a FIFA-protected contract.
"Our responsibility is to protect Atletico Madrid 's interests. Therefore, the club will file a complaint with FIFA regarding Barcelona's negotiations with a player who is still under contract during the protected period," Gil Marin affirmed.
Atletico's firm statement came after Alvarez's shocking remarks following Argentina's victory over Austria at the 2026 World Cup on the morning of June 23rd. The 26-year-old striker stated that "a transfer is the best thing for all parties" and emphasized that he wanted to fulfill his dream.
Previously, Spanish media repeatedly reported that Barcelona was Alvarez's dream destination. Real Madrid was also reportedly said to have submitted an offer of up to 150 million euros, but it was rejected by Atletico. The Madrid club has repeatedly stated that they have no intention of selling the Argentine star.
This isn't the first time Atletico has publicly criticized Barcelona over this issue. Back in late May, the red and white striped team posted a scathing message on social media, accusing their rivals of conducting a "harassment and sabotage campaign" against Alvarez through transfer rumors, misinformation, and disrespectful actions.
With Atletico deciding to take the matter to FIFA, Alvarez's future is becoming one of the biggest hot topics of the 2026 summer transfer window.
