Yesterday's trading session saw significant volatility in the global metals market following US President Donald Trump's announcement of plans to increase import tariffs. While this move aims to protect US domestic production, it also raised concerns about potential supply shortages.
At the close of trading, among precious metals, silver prices recorded a 1.54% increase, reaching $30.88 per ounce.
In a speech to Republican lawmakers on Monday (January 27), US President Trump emphasized his plan to impose import tariffs on a range of goods, including computer chips, pharmaceuticals, copper, aluminum, and steel. This measure aims to encourage domestic production in the US and reduce reliance on imports. This move has raised concerns about the potential for a contraction in the supply of silver – a crucial material in chip manufacturing due to its superior electrical and thermal conductivity. Silver is also favored in the medical field for its antibacterial properties, further increasing demand and driving prices sharply higher during the session. Furthermore, Trump's tariff plan has heightened concerns about trade tensions with international partners, leading to a flow of money into safe-haven assets, particularly precious metals like silver.
However, the prospect of the US Federal Reserve (FED) keeping interest rates unchanged at its upcoming meeting also puts pressure on this group. Higher interest rates could strengthen the US dollar, making precious metals more expensive for investors buying with other currencies, which could then curb demand for these metals.
