The transportation resource balancing problem

Việt NamViệt Nam16/02/2025

Thanh Hoa province is experiencing rapid development with remarkable progress in industry, trade, and services. Logistics plays a crucial role in promoting the flow of goods and connecting production with domestic and international markets. However, balancing transportation resources remains a major challenge, as infrastructure and human resources have not yet met demand, and the development of logistics has not kept pace with the province's potential.

Logistics: The challenge of balancing transportation resources Sky Group International Transport Joint Stock Company has invested in a fleet of container trucks to be more proactive in coordinating goods during peak periods.

Thanh Hoa province has a significant advantage as it lies on the North-South economic corridor, possessing Nghi Son seaport, the North-South railway line, Tho Xuan Airport, and a highway system connecting it to Hanoi, Hai Phong, Nghe An, etc. With these conditions, the province has the potential to develop into an important logistics center. However, in reality, the logistics infrastructure system is still not developed synchronously. Nghi Son port, despite being upgraded, is still not operating at full capacity. Due to the lack of supporting logistics services such as international standard warehouses, modern packaging systems, and strong domestic container transport services, many businesses still rely on Hai Phong port for exporting goods. Transshipment through other ports not only increases logistics costs but also prolongs delivery times, affecting the competitiveness of local businesses. To solve the problem of balancing transportation resources, logistics businesses in Thanh Hoa are gradually finding ways to adapt and optimize their operations.

Ngoc Long Technical Services and Investment Joint Stock Company is one of the leading logistics businesses in Thanh Hoa, specializing in providing services for the distribution of plastic resins from the Nghi Son Refinery and Petrochemical Plant. Each month, the company exports hundreds of containers to markets in Asia, Europe, and America. However, company representatives stated that dependence on port infrastructure is creating many challenges. Despite its great potential, Nghi Son Port cannot yet effectively serve customers due to a lack of supporting services such as internationally standardized warehousing, professional packaging services, and a sufficiently strong domestic container transport system. A large portion of goods still have to be transshipped through Hai Phong or Cat Lai ports, increasing transportation costs and extending delivery times. Furthermore, due to high export demand, the company needs a stable supply of container trucks to transport goods to the port, but the number of large-scale container transport service providers in Thanh Hoa is limited. This drives up transportation costs, especially during peak periods. To address this, the company is seeking collaborative solutions with regional transport companies to secure a stable supply of container trucks, while also researching options for building warehouses near the port to reduce reliance on logistics centers in other provinces.

Besides facing challenges related to port infrastructure, logistics businesses in Thanh Hoa also have to contend with the issue of multimodal transport connectivity. Sky Group International Transport Joint Stock Company, specializing in import and export-related logistics services, is struggling to optimize costs as the road transport system remains almost the only option for transporting goods from industrial zones to seaports or train stations. According to Ms. Le Thi Nhat Lam, General Director of the company, if the rail transport system were utilized more efficiently, businesses could significantly reduce transportation costs and increase flexibility in goods delivery. Currently, Sky Group is negotiating with rail transport partners to implement a combined rail and road transport plan, leveraging the advantages of both modes. Simultaneously, the company is expanding its investment in its container truck fleet to be more proactive in coordinating goods during peak periods.

Furthermore, the supply of skilled logistics personnel is insufficient to meet development needs. Sky Group faces difficulties in recruiting personnel with skills in supply chain management, warehouse management, and the operation of modern logistics systems. The majority of logistics workers in Thanh Hoa still lack formal training, especially in the application of technology in transportation and warehousing management. This forces the company to invest heavily in internal training, increasing operating costs and impacting operational efficiency. To address this issue, the company is collaborating with several universities and training centers to develop specialized courses, while also implementing policies to attract personnel from other provinces and cities.

Besides adapting to changing circumstances, logistics businesses in Thanh Hoa are also accelerating the application of technology in their operations to optimize processes and reduce costs. Ngoc Long Technical Services and Investment Joint Stock Company has implemented a real-time transportation tracking system, accurately monitoring the delivery routes of goods, thereby minimizing the risk of delays and optimizing transportation costs. Sky Group is also investing in a digital transportation connection platform, allowing businesses and partners to share information about transportation vehicles, thereby increasing operational efficiency and reducing empty vehicle runs.

Despite facing many challenges, the proactive approach of logistics businesses in Thanh Hoa shows a positive direction in balancing transportation resources, helping to enhance competitiveness and opening up many opportunities for future development.
