The Eifman Ballet 's ballet masterpiece, Anna Karenina – "a symphony of the body" – will be presented to audiences in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City through a collaborative effort during the year-end performance season.

Anna Karenina and the arrival of 108 Russian ballet dancers.

The organizers initially planned for five nights of performances. In Ho Chi Minh City, the ballet will be performed at the City Theatre for three nights, November 27, 28, and 29. In Hanoi, the artists will perform for two nights, December 4 and 5, at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Palace.

The organizers decided to add performances on November 30th at the City Theatre in Ho Chi Minh City and on December 3rd at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Palace in Hanoi, and to perform the entire ballet in both cities, instead of just performing excerpts in Ho Chi Minh City and the complete performance in Hanoi as originally planned.

Mr. Nguyen Bao Anh, Artistic Director of the Saigon Symphony Orchestra - the co-organizer of the Anna Karenina ballet in Vietnam - said that bringing 108 ballet dancers from Russia, along with dozens of technicians and tens of tons of equipment transported from China, involved enormous costs.

Recently, following several sold-out ballet performances by Vietnamese artists, some organizers have begun inviting Russian ballet dancers to perform.

Initially featuring excerpts, in April, artists from the Moscow National Ballet performed the complete ballet Swan Lake at the Ho Guom Theatre in Hanoi.

That time, 45 dancers from Russia came to Vietnam, while this Anna Karenina performance features a gathering of 108 artists.

It's not simply ballet.

According to the organizers, Boris Eifman, with his bold blend of classical ballet and modern movement language, is hailed as a leading choreographer.

He founded the Eifman Ballet St. Petersburg in 1977, initially named the Leningrad New Ballet, which is considered a shining symbol of contemporary dance art worldwide .

More than just a dance company, Eifman Ballet embodies a school of thought within contemporary ballet.

A distinctive feature of Eifman's works is that most of his plays have a plot and are often inspired by literature or the lives of geniuses such as Tchaikovsky, Rodin, Molière, or fictional characters like Anna Karenina.

"I don't simply choreograph ballet; I tell stories. There's philosophy, characters, tragedy, and human conflict within them. That's the path I believe many future generations of choreographers will follow," said Boris Eifman.

Anna Karenina is one of the classic literary masterpieces of the great writer Lev Tolstoy (1828 - 1910), first published in 1877.

The work portrays the tragic fate of Anna, a Russian aristocratic woman living under the constraints of harsh social norms, yet yearning for love and personal freedom. It is considered one of the greatest realist novels of all time.

The ballet Anna Karenina premiered at the Eifman Ballet on March 31, 2005.
