With an IELTS score of 4.5-5.0/9.0, candidates can receive 7 to 9 points in English when applying to universities.
Approximately 100 universities have announced their 2024 admission methods, with many continuing to use international foreign language certificates as a combined selection process. The certificate scores will be converted and then added to the scores of two subjects in the high school graduation exam or academic transcripts. The quota allocated to this method is usually less than 20%.
Each university has its own IELTS certificate conversion criteria. Currently, two universities accept IELTS scores starting from 4.5: the University of Information Technology, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, and the University of Technology and Education, Ho Chi Minh City.
At the University of Information Technology, using the graduation exam score method, candidates with an IELTS score of 4.5 will receive 8 points for English. Candidates with an IELTS score of 6.0 or higher will receive 10 points for this subject.
Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Education converts an IELTS score of 4.5 to 7.5 in English, applicable to priority admission methods, academic transcript review, and high school graduation exam score review.
Meanwhile, most universities only accept IELTS certificates with a score of 5.0 or 5.5, with an equivalent score ranging from 7 to 9. For example, at the University of Economics and Law, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, a candidate with an IELTS score of 5.0 is considered to have scored 7 points in English.
Foreign Trade University is the only university that converts IELTS scores of 6.5 or higher. Candidates must achieve an IELTS score of 8.0 to receive a perfect 10 in English. In contrast, most other universities award a 10 if the IELTS score is 7.5 or higher. Overall, the IELTS score conversion method used by universities is similar to last year.
The conversion rates for IELTS scores to English language scores in 2024 at some universities are as follows:

In addition, many universities give bonus points to candidates who have an IELTS certificate .
The Academy of Cryptography Engineering only considers high school graduation exam scores for admission. The school does not convert scores but adds priority points for candidates with an IELTS score of 5.5 or higher. The bonus points range from 1.5 to 2.5 points, an increase of 0.5 compared to last year.
When considering direct admission for students who are members of the national excellent student competition team and students from specialized schools, Hanoi Pedagogical University adds 1 to 3 priority points for those with an IELTS score of 6.5 or higher.
Some universities have not yet announced their admission plans for this year, but are expected to continue prioritizing candidates with international foreign language certificates, such as Hanoi Medical University.

Combining high school graduation exam scores or academic transcripts with international foreign language certificates was included in the admission plans of some schools in 2017, and has become more common since 2018. From being used only by economics schools, by 2023, about 100 schools, including engineering, police, and medical schools, were using these certificates in their admissions.
As the first university to use IELTS and other international language certificates for admissions, the National Economics University stated that this helps the university select more high-quality candidates.
Many experts also believe that IELTS or other international language certificates comprehensively assess candidates' listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, rather than just testing reading and writing skills like the high school graduation exam. International language certificates also help evaluate candidates' critical thinking, analytical and synthesis skills, and presentation skills. Therefore, when considered alongside other criteria, the results of this exam are suitable for many universities' admissions processes.
In 2022, out of more than 500,000 new students, the enrollment rate through methods using international certificates was 0.86%.
Many universities are expected to announce their admission plans starting in March. Applicants should research each admission method in detail to understand the requirements and registration deadlines. Some universities will consider early applications from candidates with international language certificates such as IELTS.
