Journalism in the AI era: Challenges and opportunities

In the digital age, artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming an indispensable part of most fields and journalism is no exception. The strong development of AI opens up many opportunities for journalism to transform, improve quality and efficiency of operations. However, AI also poses challenges for each press agency and journalist when determining whether to rely on technology to develop or become dependent, gradually losing the role of creativity, direction...

Journalism needs AI

First of all, in the context of information explosion and increasingly rapid dissemination, the press needs AI as a tool to process, filter and analyze data effectively. AI algorithms are capable of collecting information from many sources, detecting public opinion trends, thereby helping reporters and editors orient content more appropriately, accurately and quickly.

AI also supports the press in automating some stages of news production, such as: Compiling short news, translating, checking spelling and grammar errors, analyzing reader behavior... This helps save time, improve work efficiency, so that the press team can focus on in-depth, investigative and analytical content.

Master Duong Vinh Thien shares with journalists about AI.

Master Duong Vinh Thien, Head of Information Technology Department (Digital Center - Thai Nguyen University): For local press like Thai Nguyen province, AI is a powerful assistant in enhancing content production capacity, especially digital content. AI helps local press agencies compete better with social networks for information by optimizing content, personalizing reader experience and distributing information effectively.

The opportunities AI brings to journalism

One of the biggest opportunities AI offers is the ability to improve the quality of content. With AI tools, journalists can access and analyze large amounts of data to find important issues, quickly verify information, and discover valuable stories. This contributes to high-quality, engaging, and highly investigative journalism.

AI also opens up opportunities to innovate the newspaper economic model when tools such as customer support chatbots, content recommendation systems based on reader habits, or personalized advertising recommendation technology... help increase revenue from advertising, subscriptions, and other value-added services.

In addition, AI promotes creative forms of expression, from print, electronic newspapers to multimedia journalism such as videos , interactive graphics, podcasts. In Thai Nguyen, where there is a diverse readership and high demand for local information, applying AI to build attractive media products that are suitable for taste trends is essential.

AI is not a "magic key"

As a midland and mountainous province with many socio-economic and cultural characteristics, Thai Nguyen has great potential in developing digital journalism, especially in the forms serving policy propaganda, tourism development, education and high-tech agriculture.

100% of Thai Nguyen Newspaper's staff, reporters and editors participated in a training class on applying AI to press production.
100% of Thai Nguyen Newspaper's staff, reporters and editors participated in a training class on applying AI to press production.

Accordingly, the province's press agencies should take the initiative early to update technology, train staff on AI skills, and cooperate with technology units inside and outside the province to develop solutions to digitize content and exploit local data more effectively. "Hesitation" or standing from afar without using AI in professional work will lose the opportunity for Thai Nguyen province's journalists to work smarter, more creatively and closer to readers. Along with that, it will liberate the labor of journalists and workers in the press agency by cutting out many stages of the traditional press production process.

However, scholars and AI experts also assert that this technology is not a "master key" to replace the entire press production process, especially the requirement to orient public opinion or determine priorities in propaganda and other high requirements of the press. The verification of information and data by AI cannot guarantee absolute accuracy because it is synthesized from information sources on warehouses and platforms. Therefore, when leaders of press agencies, journalists, reporters, and editors use AI, they still need to carefully control information and data before posting.

By effectively utilizing AI, Thai Nguyen press can rise up, not only as the mouthpiece of the Party Committee, government, and forum for local people, but also as a strong information bridge between the locality and the whole country and the world.

Journalist Do Doan Hoang, part-time lecturer at the Academy of Journalism and Communication: Personally, I am still proactive and creative in creating journalistic works, especially in the genres of reportage and investigation. However, AI is an inevitable trend of the times. Therefore, for Vietnamese journalism, this is both an opportunity to innovate and improve quality, and a challenge to adapt to survive and develop. For Thai Nguyen journalism, AI is not only the solution to the resource problem, but also a lever to affirm position, spread identity and promote local socio-economic development.
