Foden's form is alarming. |
Phil Foden is going through a forgettable period of form, and that could cost him his place in the 2026 World Cup squad.
Manager Thomas Tuchel didn't shy away from admitting that the Manchester City midfielder is struggling to make an impact on the pitch, despite his positive performances in training sessions.
Foden started in both of England's most recent friendly matches, a 1-1 draw against Uruguay and a 0-1 loss to Japan. However, he failed to make a significant impact. When asked about the possibility of dropping Foden, Tuchel responded frankly: "There's no guarantee he'll go to the World Cup."
This is an alarming decline for a player once considered the future centerpiece of the England national team. Despite 44 caps for the national team, Foden has only scored 4 goals and rarely reaches his peak form at international level. Even at Manchester City, he has failed to maintain the consistency he once had.
Tuchel pointed out a clear problem: Foden plays well in training, but fails to translate that into matches. The lack of playing time at his club has further affected his touch and rhythm.
In the face of fierce competition, Foden's opportunities are increasingly limited. Players like Jude Bellingham, Marcus Rashford, and Eberechi Eze are all performing better. Even when tested in various roles, from a number 10 to a "false nine" in Harry Kane's absence, Foden has failed to make a difference.
England will announce their final squad before FIFA's deadline at the end of May. Given his current performances, Foden no longer has control over his own destiny. The World Cup, once expected to be his stage of brilliance, may now become an unfulfilled dream for the Manchester City star.
