The 80 billion VND embankment suffered a landslide of approximately 70 meters five months after its completion, and the construction company has yet to repair it.

A 70-meter landslide occurred, and approximately 1,000 meters of land subsided.

On November 1st, many workers were still urgently dismantling and reinstalling sidewalk paving stones at the embankment construction site along the Ha Giang canal, from the Giang Thanh District Administrative Center to the Dam Chit residential area (Tan Khanh Hoa commune , Giang Thanh district, Kien Giang province).

The area of ​​the embankment that collapsed has been fenced off for repairs.

According to Mr. Pham Thanh Hong, Chief of the Office of the People's Committee of Giang Thanh District, about 1,000 meters of the embankment experienced subsidence of the paving bricks due to improper compaction during construction. Therefore, the contractor had to remove the sidewalk paving bricks, re-treat the foundation, and then re-lay the bricks. Approximately 30% of the problem has been resolved.

As for the 70-meter section of the embankment that suffered serious erosion, the contractor has dismantled all the damaged columns and walls.

"Since the beginning of September, we have been rebuilding the steel frame, re-treating the entire foundation area, and preparing for concrete pouring," a construction unit official said.

Mr. Hong said that the repairs to the embankment are expected to be completed in two weeks.

The embankment project was completed and put into use in mid-March 2024, but on August 4, 2024, a landslide occurred in three sections: A35, A36, and A37.

The landslide area is expected to be repaired in two weeks.

Following the incident, the District People's Committee directed the District Investment and Construction Project Management Board, along with the construction units, supervision units, and design consultants, to conduct on-site inspections and surveys.

At the same time, the District People's Committee organized meetings to devise solutions to rectify the situation as soon as possible; and assigned the District Investment and Construction Project Management Board to directly monitor the progress of the remediation.

However, the remediation process is behind schedule compared to the contractor's expectations and commitments. The construction taking place during a period of heavy rain and storms has also somewhat affected the progress.

To date, the remediation work on the three aforementioned segments has been completed, including: pile driving, construction and installation of reinforcement steel and formwork for pouring concrete for the bottom slab of the three segments.

The embankment area is awaiting concrete pouring.

The construction unit is preparing for the remaining items: pouring concrete for the retaining wall; backfilling behind the retaining wall; completing sidewalks, landscaping, internal roads, curbs and railings.

At the same time, the lighting system at these three sections will be completed, and is expected to be finished by November 30, 2024.

The cause has not yet been determined.

Ms. Hai T, a vendor near this embankment, affirmed: "This canal has never experienced landslides before. I don't understand why it started collapsing when the embankment was built."

Mr. Duong Khanh Binh, Director of the Investment and Construction Project Management Board of Giang Thanh district (representing the investor), said that around July 2024, the construction site had already shown signs of ground subsidence.

The project, worth approximately 80 billion VND, has a total length of over 3km and includes items such as embankments, sidewalks, trees, internal roads, drainage systems, and lighting systems.

The embankment wall structure collapsed, leaning towards the Ha Giang canal for a length of nearly 70 meters. The incident occurred on no more than 5% of the entire route, causing damage estimated at approximately 300 million VND.

During a meeting with relevant units, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Giang Thanh District requested the consulting unit to re-examine the entire embankment line, conduct monitoring, and recalculate the design in order to provide a detailed report.

Many local residents expressed concerns and questioned the quality of the construction. Therefore, the investor proposed hiring an independent unit to inspect the entire project.

However, as of November 1, 2024, the cause of the incident had still not been determined.

The construction company, Bridge and Road Construction Company No. 10, is responsible for the remedial costs, as the project is still under warranty.

According to a report from the Giang Thanh District Investment and Construction Project Management Board, the aforementioned embankment project suffered landslides in 2023.

At that time, the structure was under construction, so the investor's representative doubted its stability and requested the Kien Giang Department of Construction Inspection Center to assess its stability and structural safety.

However, the Kien Giang Department of Construction Inspection Center refused to carry out the inspection.
