Two consecutive defeats against Saudi Arabia (2-3) and Iraq (0-1) within a few days ended Indonesia's hopes of participating in the 2026 World Cup . This performance displeased the country's media, and the role of coach Kluivert was particularly scrutinized.

Following that, the Indonesian newspaper pointed out another mistake by the former Dutch star in the match against Saudi Arabia. Kluivert used a 4-3-3 formation and fielded midfielder Marc Klok in the starting lineup despite his previous poor form. But instead of making adjustments when he saw Klok underperforming, Kluivert kept the same lineup for the entire 90 minutes, a choice deemed illogical against a strong opponent.
