Two consecutive defeats against Saudi Arabia (2-3) and Iraq (0-1) within a few days ended Indonesia's hopes of participating in the 2026 World Cup. This performance displeased the country's media, and the role of coach Kluivert was particularly scrutinized.
Since taking office, Kluivert has faced considerable criticism, most notably for his abrupt tactical changes and controversial personnel choices.
According to Bola , in the third-round qualifying match against Australia, the Dutch strategist adopted an aggressive attacking style without focusing on defensive solidity and player adaptability. This hasty change in the team's approach cost Indonesia dearly, resulting in a 0-1 defeat.

Following that, the Indonesian newspaper pointed out another mistake by the former Dutch star in the match against Saudi Arabia. Kluivert used a 4-3-3 formation and fielded midfielder Marc Klok in the starting lineup despite his previous poor form. But instead of making adjustments when he saw Klok underperforming, Kluivert kept the same lineup for the entire 90 minutes, a choice deemed illogical against a strong opponent.
"When Kluivert was appointed to replace Shin Tae-yong, very high expectations were placed on him. But his inability to bring about a breakthrough change meant he had to accept a heavy defeat," Bola further commented.
With glaring tactical errors, conservative team selection, and disappointing results, Kluivert's future in Indonesia is highly unpredictable.
Currently, the Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) is conducting a comprehensive review of the team's performance and coaching staff. Kluivert and his colleagues face the risk of dismissal following recent disappointing results.
