Protecting forests at the grassroots level in Thanh Son

As one of the districts rich in forest resources in the province, Thanh Son district has proactively developed plans suitable to its specific characteristics for forest management and protection over the years, focusing on strengthening the local forest ranger force to protect forests at the grassroots level. As a result, the forests have been well protected and developed, contributing to the socio-economic development and ecological environment of the district.

The Thanh Son District Forest Protection Unit is cooperating with the people of Cu Thang commune in managing and protecting forest resources.

To ensure effective forest management and protection, the Thanh Son District Forest Ranger Station proactively advises the Party Committee and local government on comprehensive leadership and direction in the forestry sector, and coordinates with relevant agencies and departments to implement synchronized solutions for forest protection and development. Local Party committees, governments, and forest owners have demonstrated a high level of responsibility in leadership, direction, and implementation to mobilize the strength of the entire political system and the whole population to participate in forest protection. Forest rangers working in the area have assisted the Party Committee and local government in carrying out tasks and plans for forest management and protection, and forest fire prevention and control plans according to the "four on-the-spot" principle.

The prevention and control of illegal logging, deforestation, and the illegal trade, transportation, and processing of forest products are carried out regularly. In 2024, in addition to continuing to assign forest rangers to work in communes to advise the government on forest protection at the source, the District Forest Management Unit coordinated with relevant agencies and local authorities to strengthen forest security inspections in communes rich in forest resources and key forest areas; implementing many solutions, from propaganda to increased inspection, control, and strict handling of violators. The work of understanding the area, methods of information gathering, and methods of patrolling and inspecting resource-rich forest areas was innovated to promptly detect and prevent illegal logging by unscrupulous individuals. The inspection and supervision of forest product exploitation by organizations and individuals in the area were carried out effectively in accordance with regulations.

Simultaneously, the Forest Protection Department closely coordinated with local authorities and relevant agencies to encourage the public to report individuals involved in illegal logging, deforestation, trading, transportation, and business of forest products; organized raids and cleared illegal deforestation sites, and resolutely dealt with violations. By the end of November, the District Forest Protection Department had detected and handled 18 cases involving 18 individuals violating the Forestry Law, collecting over 60 million VND for the State budget. In addition, local forest rangers, in coordination with the People's Committees of communes and towns and relevant agencies, organized 15 awareness conferences attended by 1,642 people and forest owners contracted to protect forests; distributed 1,800 leaflets; repaired 6km of firebreaks; and effectively protected nearly 10,000 hectares of existing natural forest.

Thanks to the synchronized implementation of various solutions, violations of the Forestry Law in Thanh Son district have significantly decreased in both the number of cases and the severity of violations compared to previous years. There are no "hot spots" of deforestation, illegal logging, trading, or transportation of forest products in the district. Violations are detected early, and perpetrators are quickly identified, thus having a deterrent effect and a significant impact on legal education regarding forest protection in the locality.

Comrade Nguyen Quang Hung, Head of the Thanh Son District Forest Protection Department, said: To achieve good results in forest protection and conservation, in the coming time, the District Forest Protection Department will continue to strengthen propaganda and education, raise awareness and responsibility of people regarding forest management and protection; improve the capacity of forest rangers, and at the same time strengthen the forest ranger force in the areas under their responsibility. They will effectively monitor the changes in forest resources; do a good job of forest fire prevention and control through measures to inspect and control activities such as slash-and-burn farming, and increase the dissemination of forest fire warning bulletins to better protect the existing forest area. They will strengthen inspection and control in key areas where deforestation, illegal logging, trading, and transportation of forest products frequently occur, detecting and handling violations strictly and promptly in accordance with the law.
