THE ART OF GOAL SCORING "EXHIBITION"
For the first time in the history of the Champions League, a match will feature both teams scoring over 40 goals in the competition since the start of the season. Specifically: Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) have scored 43 goals in this season's Champions League, while Bayern Munich have scored 42 (having played two fewer matches than PSG). It's still unknown who will win, but it seems likely that Barcelona's record of 45 goals in the 1999-2000 Champions League season will be broken, possibly in this match!

Talking about Bayern and PSG this season means talking about their incredible goal-scoring prowess. But it's not just about the numbers. Their attractive, attacking style of play, honed to perfection, is even more impressive. Therefore, the key thing to watch in the second leg between Bayern and PSG is which team will score more goals, not whether or not there are any goals. Bayern will naturally try to score many goals to overturn the deficit. But PSG will also attack, instead of cautiously defending to maintain their advantage (currently leading 5-4). Defending is not the forte of the reigning Champions League champions.
It's astonishing: Bayern's last three matches have seen a total of 22 goals, yet none of them ended with a margin of more than one goal. And when Bayern overcame Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals (winning 2-1 and 4-3), both sides fired 70 shots at each other's goal in just 180 minutes. It's clear: Bayern's style of play leads to such results. Whether the opponent is Real, PSG, Heidelheim, or Mainz, Bayern's issue is always whether they score more goals than their opponent, not how to control the opponent's scoring ability. Bayern's style of play guarantees one thing: scoring opportunities will appear regularly, even for both sides!
WHAT ARE THE HOPES FOR THE HOME TEAM?
In their history of participating in the Champions League, PSG have suffered more defeats at home than at Bayern Munich (losing 5 out of 7 matches; 4 of those 5 defeats were by a margin of 2-3 goals). In both of their most recent encounters with PSG at their home stadium, Allianz Arena, Bayern won. However, this is a detail where statistics can be misleading. Which PSG team is preparing to visit Munich? Everyone knows that the reigning Champions League champions have only truly risen to world- class status in the last year or so (since the middle of last season). The PSG teams that have faced Bayern before (including the team that lost to Bayern in the 2020 Champions League final) are insignificant.
There's a more noteworthy statistic, and one that's certainly worrying Bayern fans. In their last 10 Champions League semi-final first leg defeats, Bayern have only managed to overturn the deficit in the second leg once, and that happened 44 years ago (a win against CSKA Sofia in the 1981-1982 season). This time, Bayern not only have to beat PSG, they also have to contend with the weight of history.
In their last two Champions League matches, PSG allowed their opponents (Liverpool and Bayern) to touch the ball in their penalty area 50 or more times. That's far too many (remember: the ball usually only rolls on the pitch for a little over 50 minutes in a match). And that's where Bayern's hope lies. Although they lost 4-5 in the first leg, Bayern were superior in terms of dangerous shots on goal (xG of 3.06 compared to PSG's 1.90).
Having rotated their squads during the weekend's league matches, neither side suffered any injuries. However, PSG did suffer a major setback from the first leg: full-back Achraf Hakimi sustained an injury and will be out for several weeks. Bayern not only maintained their strongest lineup but also saw the return of coach Vincent Kompany (who was banned from the touchline in the first leg).
Opta's computer predicts Bayern have a 52.7% chance of winning the second leg, but PSG have a 57.8% chance of reaching the final. It seems the situation is still evenly matched.
