Benjamin Mendy's decline

Perhaps few could have imagined that Benjamin Mendy – a 2018 World Cup champion with the French national team – would fall into such a dark spiral in his career.

Zurich FC terminated Mendy's contract after only 5 months.

In just a few years, the defender, who once cost over £50 million at Manchester City, has lost everything: his reputation, his form, and even the respect of the fans.

Recently, FC Zurich terminated Mendy's contract after only 5 months, a decision that was not surprising to those who had followed him for some time. Coach Ricardo Moniz frankly stated that Mendy "did not meet the expectations of a high-class player," and pointed out that his biggest problem lay not only in his physical condition but also in his attitude.

The situation culminated in April, when Mendy was caught partying all night after the 0-4 defeat against Basel. “After such a heavy loss, you can’t do that to the fans,” Moniz said, visibly disappointed.

In the eight rare appearances for Zurich, Mendy barely made any impact. His fitness was rated as "below standard," which is unacceptable for a player who has competed in the Premier League and Champions League.

Furthermore, Mendy's relationship with Zurich fans was also strained. Even in his debut match, a section of the fans displayed protest banners, partly due to the legal controversies he had been involved in in England.

Mendy's career took a nosedive following a high-profile, months-long case involving allegations of rape and sexual assault. Although he was ultimately acquitted by a British court, his image was severely damaged.

Mendy used to be a star for Man City.

Manchester City, the club that once paid the French star millions of pounds annually, immediately terminated his contract in 2023. He then sought to salvage his career at Lorient, before moving to Zurich hoping to start over. But after only five months, that door slammed shut in Switzerland as well.

It's a shame for a player once considered the future of French football. Mendy wasn't lacking in talent, but the way he lost his discipline and professional composure caused his career to spiral downwards. From a winger with outstanding speed and strength, he is now seen as a "burden" even in a relatively less demanding league like the Swiss Super League.

The question now is: Is there any team still willing to give Mendy a second chance? At 31, he doesn't have much time left to rediscover his glory. The world of football is cruel to players who lack motivation and discipline. If Mendy doesn't reflect on himself, no contract can salvage his rapidly declining career.

Benjamin Mendy once had it all: talent, titles, and the opportunity to become a world-class defender. But sometimes, a single wrong step can take everything from glory to ruin. And for Mendy, a series of mistakes are turning his career into a costly lesson in discipline, professionalism, and willpower – qualities more important than pure talent.
