Kien Giang - While repairing electrical systems at a resort in Phu Quoc, a worker was bitten by a large, hairy black spider, causing his hand to swell and leaving him in pain all over his body.

The worker went to the SOS Clinic in Phu Quoc for examination, bringing along the spider that had bitten him, measuring 4 cm in length and 13 cm in leg span, so that the doctors could identify the type of venom and provide appropriate treatment.

On October 27th, Dr. Doan Thanh Hien, Head of the Internal Medicine Department at SOS Phu Quoc Clinic, stated that the patient was poisoned by a spider bite. However, the clinic does not have spider antivenom, so they are only treating the symptoms based on the Ministry of Health 's protocol.

Accordingly, the doctors cleaned the patient's wound, injected local anesthetic to prevent the poison from spreading, administered intravenous fluids, and treated the patient with anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-edema, and pain-relieving medications. After two hours of monitoring, the symptoms subsided, and the patient was discharged home.

According to Doctor Hien, the spider that bit the patient was the largest he had ever seen. Its entire body was hairy, its head was long, and it had two sharp fangs; the species was unknown. The patient recounted that the spider was hiding in a dark corner and suddenly bit his hand while he was repairing electrical wiring.

This is the second patient treated for spider bites at the SOS Phu Quoc Clinic this rainy season. Doctor Hien said that spider venom is usually alkaline or acidic, similar to bee venom. When they bite, it causes burns at the wound site and poisoning in the body through the bloodstream.

Doctor Hien advises that at the end of the rainy season, people need to be careful when going outside, and should bring boots and protective gear to avoid snake, centipede, spider, and insect bites. At the same time, people should proactively clear vegetation and clean up the environment to prevent insects and snakes from hiding near their homes.
