To restore healthy and beautiful skin, dermatologists advise people not to rush into using or applying cosmetics of unknown origin and without proper testing.

Common skin "damage"

Having just returned to work after a two-week Lunar New Year holiday, Ms. Tran My Tien (from Tran Bien ward, Dong Nai province) immediately went to Dong Nai Dermatology Hospital to have her skin checked and "refreshed" because she noticed her skin was dull and had dark spots. Ms. Tien said: "Because of the long Tet holiday, the whole family went on trips to many places, climbing mountains and swimming in the sea. During outdoor activities, with the mindset of 'it's Tet,' I didn't regularly apply sunscreen or wear long-sleeved clothes like usual."

Dermatologists advise that beauty is a process, and people, especially women, should not rush into using exfoliating products or cosmetics of unknown origin, or topical medications containing corticosteroids without a prescription.

Dr. Truong Thi Tuong Vi, from the Outpatient Department of Dong Nai Dermatology Hospital, shared: After the Tet holiday, the demand for skin care and treatment increased sharply. On the first working day of the year alone, the hospital received over 400 patients for examination and treatment. Common conditions included atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, urticaria, acne, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. In addition, many patients also came to the hospital for cosmetic skin treatments and advanced skin care services.

According to specialists, the causes of these conditions are due to the fact that during Tet (Lunar New Year), many people consume a lot of sweets, cakes, candies, soft drinks, greasy foods, and beer and alcohol. In addition, the changing weather, dry and cold temperatures, low humidity, late nights, frequent travel, frequent makeup use, and busy schedules mean that many women have little time for regular skincare, leading to a weakened skin barrier.

Notably, many cases of atopic dermatitis and contact dermatitis tend to worsen due to contact with detergents and chemicals during house cleaning before and after Tet (Lunar New Year). In addition, skin darkening, melasma, and dullness become much more common due to increased sun exposure during holiday trips without adequate protection.

Skin restoration requires persistence and the right approach.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh, a specialist in dermatology at Thuan My ITO Dong Nai Hospital (part of Hoan My Medical Group), advises: To restore the beauty of your skin, people need to adjust their lifestyle and diet, such as drinking enough water, reducing sugary foods, limiting alcohol consumption, and increasing the intake of green vegetables, fruits, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Getting 7-8 hours of sleep each day and avoiding staying up late after 11 PM also allows the skin time to regenerate naturally.

Simultaneously, simplify your skincare routine. When your skin is sensitive, using too many products can overload it. A basic routine of cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection is sufficient for your skin to gradually stabilize. In particular, instead of exfoliating, prioritize skin repair and regeneration. Intensive treatments such as deep hydration, deep cleansing, and restoring the protective barrier will help your skin become healthier from the root, rather than just improving the surface.

For cases of inflammatory acne, noticeable dark spots or melasma, redness, peeling skin, persistent itching, etc., a visit to a dermatologist is necessary. At specialized medical facilities, patients will have their skin condition assessed to develop a personalized treatment plan.

"Commonly applied methods include: medical-grade acne treatment (combining topical and oral medications and sterile extraction of acne lesions); pigmentation control (using specialized medications, appropriate concentration chemical peels, or laser technology); and intensive restoration (moisturizing and regenerating to improve skin elasticity and radiance)," Dr. Thanh emphasized.

According to experts, timely treatment not only helps skin improve quickly but also minimizes the risk of long-term dark spots, scars, or melasma. Beautiful skin is not simply about being fair and bright, but more importantly, about being healthy and stable. The period after Tet (Lunar New Year) is the ideal time to "reset" your skin and lifestyle. Maintaining a balanced lifestyle, proper skincare, and regular check-ups will help your skin recover sustainably. More importantly, it's also a way for everyone to start the new year with confidence and positive energy.
