Comment: PSG - a star that doesn't shine!

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên05/06/2023

Lionel Messi left. Sergio Ramos left. Coach Christophe Galtier was sacked… The Ligue 1 championship seemed less noteworthy than the flood of news – all announced before the season truly ended. In Ligue 1, PSG had no worthy opponent, so it was no surprise they won! But PSG were eliminated in the round of 16 in both remaining competitions: the Champions League and the French Cup. The press predicted: PSG would undergo a major overhaul this summer. What's wrong with a team that just set a record for the most national championships facing the need for a overhaul?

Next season Messi will no longer be playing for PSG.

On numerous occasions, Messi has been booed by his own PSG fans, even during his first World Cup-winning season. Leaving aside the professional aspect, this story shows that Messi lacks symbolic value in the French capital. This is perhaps the biggest failure of what the PSG owners had hoped for. PSG, of course, should always be the top contender for the title in France, regardless of whether Messi is there or not. Not long ago, Messi even left for Saudi Arabia without permission, accepting a heavy penalty from PSG.

That's Coach Galtier's responsibility, and he deserves to be dismissed for his inability to manage the stars? In reality, PSG has always been an environment incompatible with stars, causing them to wither or become dissatisfied rather than energized and perform better. This is a long story that began when Nasser Al-Khelaifi took over as president and ordered a dedicated telephone line for him to call directly to the players' rooms to give instructions! Previously, it wasn't surprising that Sporting Director Leonardo often "played the leading role," instead of the head coach or any of the stars. This season, after Leonardo's departure (apparently due to a failed power struggle), Sporting Director Luis Campos was seen giving tactical instructions in the match against Lille – while Coach Galtier just… sat silently.

PSG has always been a team of "veteran" figures, but unfortunately, these symbols of power are not players on the field. This is the biggest reason why this incredibly wealthy club has never been qualified to compete for the top spot in the Champions League. That's not a true team! Therefore, it's difficult to expect anything from PSG's reform this summer. Only when president Al Khelaifi – a former tennis player who once reached the top 1,000 (his highest ATP ranking was 995) – no longer wants to be involved in professional matters, will things change!

The way PSG sacked Thomas Tuchel says it all (Tuchel was the coach who achieved the miracle of reaching the Champions League final for PSG for the first time, then after being sacked, went on to Chelsea and won the Champions League with them). The choice of Galtier last season is similar. He was a coach who had success with smaller teams like St Etienne, Lille, and Nice. But he lacked his own ideas, personality, and philosophy; in short, he wasn't good enough to manage at the highest level. Al Khelaifi's understanding of football is no different from Todd Boehly's, who desperately wanted to "do his job professionally" at Chelsea, sacked Tuchel, replaced him with a lower-level coach like Graham Potter, and then sacked Potter as well!
