The highest-grossing film of 2025 has been beaten.

“A Minecraft Movie” lost its box office crown after three weeks of release. Nevertheless, it remains one of the highest-grossing films currently, firmly holding the title of the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025.

The number one spot at the North American box office changed hands after three days (April 18-20) compared to the previous week. Newcomer Sinners beat its studio counterpart, A Minecraft Movie , to become the highest-grossing film of the weekend.

According to Variety , the vampire horror film grossed $45.6 million from 3,308 theaters in North America. This marks the biggest opening weekend for an original film since Jordan Peele's Us (which opened in 2019 with $71 million).

At the international box office, Sinners brought in an additional $15.4 million for Warner Bros., raising its total global revenue to $61 million.

Sinners had an impressive opening weekend, earning $45.6 million at the North American box office.

"This is a great start for a period horror film. However, the enormous production costs create significant challenges and pressure," commented David A. Gross, who runs the film consulting firm FranchiseRe.

Warner Bros. previously stated that it spent up to $90 million to produce Sinners , not including global marketing costs. Therefore, whether the film will be profitable remains to be seen.

In Sinners , Michael B. Jordan plays two roles simultaneously: identical twins Elijah and Elias Moore, both World War I veterans. In 1932, they return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta after years in Chicago, opening a saloon for the local Black community. Unbeknownst to them, a malevolent supernatural force awaits them. The film is rated R, meaning it is not suitable for audiences under 18.

The film received positive reviews from both audiences and critics. Sinners is the only horror film in over 35 years to receive an "A" rating from CinemaScore. Meanwhile, its average score on Rotten Tomatoes is near-perfect, at 98%.

Nearly 40% of the initial ticket buyers were Black, 35% were White, 18% were Hispanic, and 5% were Asian, reflecting the diversity of the audience.

After holding the top spot at the box office for two weeks , A Minecraft Movie has been pushed down to second place. However, the film's weekend revenue was not bad at all, with $41.3 million at the North American box office. To date, A Minecraft Movie has earned a total of $344 million domestically and $720.8 million globally. The film maintains its title as the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2025.

A Minecraft Movie continues to maintain its momentum in its third week of release.

Sinners and A Minecraft Movie are helping Warner Bros. turn things around after two consecutive failures of The Alto Knights and Mickey 17 .

After this weekend, box office revenue is up 5% from 2024, although it is still nearly 29% lower than in 2019, according to Comscore . This is a significant improvement from a few weeks ago, when ticket sales were more than 11% lower than in 2024 and 40% slower than in 2019.

Snow White continues to drop in the rankings, falling from 8th place last week to 10th. The film earned nearly $1.2 million in its three-day weekend in North America. Its global revenue since release is $184.9 million.
