Accordingly, 5 out of the top 8 positions in the group – equivalent to direct qualification to the round of 16 – are currently held by English giants.
The Premier League is too strong.
Arsenal are at the top of the table with a perfect record of 7 wins in 7 matches. Next is Liverpool in 4th place with 15 points, Tottenham in 5th place with 14 points, Newcastle and Chelsea in 7th and 8th place respectively with 13 points each. Man City, despite having 13 points, are in 11th place due to an inferior goal difference.
The gap between Real Madrid in 3rd place and Juventus in 15th place is 3 points. Surprises are entirely possible in the final matchday, and Liverpool and Chelsea could also drop out of the top 8. But don't be surprised if all 6 Premier League representatives secure early qualification for the round of 16.
In the final round of matches, Man City will host Galatasaray at home. Liverpool have a more manageable match against Qarabag. Tottenham will face Frankfurt, a team with no hope of progressing further. Only Chelsea (against Napoli) and Newcastle (against PSG) face significant challenges. However, the Premier League currently has virtually secured all six teams in the knockout stage (at least the play-off round).
For comparison, La Liga currently has only one representative in the top 8, Real Madrid. Expanding to the top 24 (the final position to qualify for the play-offs), La Liga also includes Barca (9th), Atletico (12th), and Athletic Bilbao (23rd).
Similarly, the Bundesliga has four representatives, but only Bayern Munich made it into the top eight. Dortmund and Leverkusen (ranked 16th and 20th) are likely to make the play-offs, but have almost no chance of directly reaching the round of 16. Serie A (Italy) doesn't even have a single representative in the top eight.
The overwhelming number of players in the qualifying rounds demonstrates the true strength of English football.
Financial strength
It's worth noting that two of the six English teams mentioned above are languishing in the middle of the Premier League table: Newcastle and Tottenham. Meanwhile, Man City, Liverpool, and Chelsea are all experiencing a disappointing season.
But even when playing below par, the English giants remain incredibly consistent in continental competitions. This isn't just a matter of temporary form. It stems from two decades of English football management, the fair distribution of revenue, and the emphasis on media, marketing, and the quality of football itself.
The concept of the "big 6" is a thing of the past. The Premier League now has nearly 10 "big clubs," with Newcastle and Aston Villa joining the ranks of top-four contenders. There are also a host of financially strong teams like Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Brighton, and others.
Looking at a summer transfer window reveals the overwhelming strength of English teams. Newly promoted teams like Sunderland and Leeds are willing to spend over 100-150 million euros on player acquisitions.
Teams like Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Bournemouth are also capable of attracting top stars from other leagues. As for the mid-table clubs like Newcastle, Tottenham, and Aston Villa, they even surpass the top teams in Serie A and Bundesliga in terms of spending power.
The Premier League is increasingly dominating European football. And the title of "the most exciting league on the planet" held real value for the Premier League.
