Joao Felix is a high-profile signing for the SPL this summer. |
The Saudi Pro League (SPL) is undergoing a bold transformation. After years of heavy spending to recruit superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, and Karim Benzema, Saudi Arabian owners will no longer be paying exorbitant salaries to their players.
According to The Times , SPL clubs are sending a message to star players in the transfer market that they will not be splashing out on transfers. Players are drawn to the SPL because they believe the quality of life in Saudi Arabia is better than in Europe.
Most recently, Karim Benzema's future at Al Ittihad has become a hot topic after the two sides failed to negotiate a contract extension.
Since leaving Real Madrid in 2023 and joining Al Ittihad on a free transfer, Benzema signed a contract worth up to $108 million per year. The French striker immediately became one of the highest-paid players in the league.
With Benzema set to become a free agent at the end of the season, the Saudi Pro League club has not yet offered him a contract extension and wants the striker to take a pay cut.
Even Mohamed Salah, a target for the SPL next month, has been mentioned in this context. Sources from Saudi Arabia indicate they would not pay much more than his current salary at Liverpool (around £25 million per year).
