"After I finish this painting, please use it as my profile picture on the National Day of Mourning," - this was the heartfelt message from Do Viet Dung, a 7th-grade student from Ha Hoa Secondary School in Ha Hoa town, Ha Hoa district, to his mother, Bui Thi Phuong Hoa, from Zone 1, Ha Hoa town. The painting was a special portrait of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong.

Chi Phuong Hoa confided: “Over the past time, through the mass media, I learned that the General Secretary's health was not good. I also spent a lot of time paying attention, reading the information, and talking to Dung. On the day the General Secretary passed away, I also talked to him. After we talked, he told me that he wanted to draw a portrait of the General Secretary and wanted me to use it as his profile picture on Facebook on the day of national mourning.”
True to his word, after meals, Dung would return to his room, brainstorm ideas, and sketch the first lines. It took him a whole afternoon to create the framework, after which he began working on the details. The painting was completed in about 10 hours. What's special is that Dung painted it on a glossy cardboard surface. “A few days later, I saw him borrow my phone and tell me to wait and see the artwork. My whole family was quite excited. When the phone's flashlight was turned on, illuminating the painting he had just finished, gradually the features of the General Secretary's face appeared on the wall. The whole family felt moved,” shared Ms. Hoa.

When asked about the idea of painting on cellophane, Dung said that he hadn't received any formal art training. He felt that painting on paper was quite normal and wanted to explore more unique and creative ways of expression. For him, completing a painting on cellophane requires meticulousness and care. While on paper, a wrong brushstroke can be erased or redrawn, but on cellophane, instead of a pen, he uses a craft knife to draw scratches to create shapes and forms. A slight mistake can affect the entire frame and details.
"Painting on glossy cardboard is a technique that utilizes scratches that block light when illuminated, creating areas of light and shadow to form shapes. The scratches are white, but the resulting image is black. Therefore, during the painting process, one must use their imagination to determine which strokes will create different shapes when illuminated," Dũng explained.

One unique aspect is that even when the painting is finished, it's still just a sketch, making it difficult to see and visualize what it depicts. To view these paintings, you have to shine a light on the sketch against a white background in a dark space. This is an incredibly creative technique, and the paintings are very captivating and engaging for viewers.
As a young boy, through his mother's stories and the information he read and saw in newspapers and on television, Dung had come to know and cherish the leaders of his country. His portrait of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong is his way of expressing his love, respect, and gratitude for the highest leader of our Party and State. Previously, Dung had also depicted President Ho Chi Minh in this unique style.
This morning, along with the people of the whole country, Ms. Hoa's family also took the time to watch the memorial service for General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, and keeping her promise to her son, her profile picture was replaced with a special painting drawn by her son. This is how her family commemorates General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong with deep respect and gratitude.
