Thailand has decided to increase its foreign player quota. |
At an online meeting on January 22nd, attended by representatives from 16 Thai League 1 clubs, the Football Association of Thailand (FAT) agreed on key adjustments to prepare for the 2026/27 season.
The biggest change is the increase in the number of foreign players. According to the new regulations, each Thai League 1 club will be allowed to register a maximum of 10 foreign players, with a maximum of 7 foreign players on the field at the same time. This regulation completely replaces the old model, which limited foreign players to 7 plus a slot reserved for players from the ASEAN region.
This is seen as a bold move by FAT in its efforts to improve the professional quality of the league, helping Thai clubs increase their competitiveness in continental competitions, and bringing them closer to the operating model of many top Asian championships.
In addition, FAT President Madam Pang also proposed notable reforms related to the youth league system, especially the U21 league. According to the proposed plan, teams participating in the U21 league could be allowed to use a maximum of four over-age players, including one foreign player. The goal of this proposal is to create a more realistic competitive environment for young players, allowing them to gain experience against more experienced players and accelerate their development.
According to FAT, these changes aim to improve the quality of the Thai League and play a crucial role in the sustainable development strategy of Thai football, from club level to youth training.
