A shark attack killed an American woman.

Police said the attack occurred near a resort in western New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamas. The woman was with a relative when she was attacked by the shark; both were rescued by a lifeguard.

Police said: "CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) was performed on the victim. However, she sustained serious injuries to the right side of her body, including her hip and upper limbs." Police said the woman died at the scene.
