Police said the attack occurred near a resort in western New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamas. The woman was with a relative when she was attacked by the shark; both were rescued by a lifeguard.
Police said: "CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) was performed on the victim. However, she sustained serious injuries to the right side of her body, including her hip and upper limbs." Police said the woman died at the scene.
Although fatal shark attacks are uncommon in the Bahamas, at least two other incidents have been recorded recently.
Police said that on November 21, a 47-year-old German woman went missing while scuba diving off the West End of the Grand Bahama after being attacked by a shark.
In September 2022, a 58-year-old American woman died in a shark attack while snorkeling with her family off the coast of New Providence.
