Kevin Pina's free-kick and Helio Varela's timely goal helped Cabo Verde secure a surprising 2-2 draw against Uruguay at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The match took place this morning (June 22nd).
The small Cabo Verde team secured another memorable draw against a former FIFA World Cup champion. After a goalless draw with Spain, Bubista's side turned the tables after falling behind in the first half to hold Uruguay to a draw at Miami Stadium.
Cabo Verde unexpectedly took the lead when Telmo Arcanjo earned a free kick, and from 34 meters, Kevin Pina struck the ball through the wall and into the bottom corner of the Uruguayan goalkeeper's net in the 21st minute.

However, Uruguay turned the tide with quick goals before halftime. Maxi Araujo headed in the winning goal in the 44th minute after Rodrigo Bentancur's header hit the post. And shortly afterwards, Agustin Canobbio tapped the ball in after Araujo's header, beating renowned goalkeeper Vozinha in the 45+6 minute. Uruguay led 2-1 at halftime.
Coach Bubista's team was gifted an equalizer when Varela capitalized on a Uruguayan defensive error and successfully finished the ball into the net. After that, Uruguay completely controlled the game, but they couldn't break through the defense brilliantly commanded by Pico Lopes and Sidny Lopes Cabral. The final score was 2-2.
This match marked a milestone. Fernando Muslera of Uruguay and Vozinha of Cabo Verde were the first two goalkeepers over 40 to play in a World Cup match.

"I dreamed of this, but I never imagined it would happen this way. Scoring my first goal for the national team in my World Cup debut is unbelievable. I'm speechless," shared Helio Varela, a Cabo Verde player, emotionally after the match.
Cabo Verde's coach Bubista expressed strong belief in his team: "I want to congratulate the whole team and everyone for the way we played, with all our hearts. We fought a difficult match, with many players suffering from cramps. But the whole team was very brave throughout the game, always aiming for victory, and that makes us very happy."
I have faith in all my players and the whole team to continue playing with the same spirit. I am pleased with what the team achieved today."
