According to reports from the Fisheries Association of key provinces such as An Giang and Dong Thap, in the first week of January 2024, the price of commercial pangasius (raw fish for export processing factories) continued to decrease by 200-500 VND/kg compared to the previous week.
Specifically, the current price of fish in the 700g - 1kg size ranges from 24,800 - 25,300 VND/kg, while for larger fish over 1.3kg, the price ranges from 25,000 - 25,500 VND/kg.
The main reason is the decline in exports to key markets such as the US, the Middle East, and ASEAN.
Due to the downward trend in fish prices over the past few days, many fish farmers are still hesitant to start a new farming season. Currently, most processing and export businesses are utilizing supplies from their own ponds.
Meanwhile, the supply of fingerlings for new stocking is a significant challenge. Contrary to the decline in commercial fish prices, the price of pangasius fingerlings in the Mekong Delta is showing signs of a slight increase.
Currently, the price of catfish fry has increased by 0.2 - 0.4 VND/fry, equivalent to 1.4 VND/fry. However, companies are still finding it difficult to purchase the desired quantity of fry. The main reason is the reduced supply.
According to an analysis by provincial fisheries associations, cold weather has caused a decrease in the number of eggs laid by broodstock. Furthermore, the cold weather has resulted in significant losses of newly hatched fish within the first 30 days.
