Foods and drinks that relieve stomach pain

VnExpressVnExpress14/10/2023

For people with stomach pain, eating ginger, bananas, drinking chamomile tea, and eating yogurt can help increase bowel motility and reduce nausea and discomfort.

Stomach pain causes symptoms such as bloating, cramping, diarrhea, cramps, and nausea. According to Nguyen Thu Huyen, a specialist in the Nutrition Department at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi , there are many ways to alleviate stomach pain, including certain foods that help control discomfort.

Ginger : Increases gastrointestinal motility, which can prevent indigestion, bloating, gas, and reduce nausea. Make fresh ginger tea by slicing ginger and steeping it in hot water, adding a little lemon or honey for flavor. Don't add too much ginger as it can easily upset your stomach. Only drink one or two cups of ginger tea per day.

Bananas : Stomach symptoms like nausea and vomiting can easily lead to dehydration and loss of electrolytes such as potassium and sodium. Bananas are high in fiber, which promotes water absorption from the intestines, aids in stool binding, and is beneficial for the digestive system.

Bananas also have natural antacid properties, and their high potassium content helps increase mucus production in the stomach, preventing irritation of the stomach lining. The nutrients in bananas contribute to increased resistance when the stomach and digestive system are experiencing problems.

Expert Huyen advises that people with stomach problems should only eat ripe bananas, avoiding green or unripe ones, as the sap can easily irritate the stomach, causing a burning sensation and discomfort. It's recommended to eat bananas about 20-30 minutes after a meal, not on an empty stomach.

Chamomile tea : Herbal teas are helpful in relieving stomach pain. The anti-inflammatory properties of chamomile soothe stomach aches. This drink is also beneficial for the digestive system, but you should only drink 1-2 cups per day; excessive consumption may cause nausea and vomiting.

Yogurt : Stomach pain can be caused by a deficiency of certain probiotics, also known as good bacteria, in the gut. Yogurt, rich in probiotics, helps maintain a balanced gut, reducing unexplained stomach pain.

Starch : Consuming foods like rice, bread, and potatoes in moderation can alleviate this condition. Simple carbohydrates are easily digestible and provide the necessary calories for the stomach. These starches help increase the absorption of excess water, reducing the contractions that cause discomfort during stomach pain.

Chicken : Provides protein that is easy for the stomach to digest. Patients should eat skinless chicken to reduce the amount of fat in their diet, thereby reducing nausea and controlling diarrhea. Chicken should be prepared simply by steaming or boiling. Combining chicken with white rice or potatoes provides both nutrition and reduces discomfort from stomach pain.

Coconut water : Rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium, it replenishes fluids lost due to vomiting and diarrhea. In some cases, coconut water is used as an oral rehydration solution for children with diarrhea caused by gastroenteritis and cholera.

Specialist Huyen advises patients with stomach pain to avoid dairy products, fried foods, stimulants, etc. Foods with high acidity, such as citrus fruits and tomatoes, increase the likelihood of stomach pain, acid reflux, and worsen stomach pain symptoms.

Patients should seek medical attention early if symptoms are severe, such as stomach pain accompanied by vomiting blood, intense abdominal pain, fever, or bloody stools that turn black.
