According to the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC), scoliosis in children usually progresses slowly and rarely causes pain in the early stages. Therefore, regular observation by parents plays a crucial role in early detection, helping to limit the risk of spinal deformity and subsequent complications.
Each week, parents only need to spend a few minutes checking their child's posture. When the child stands upright, observe whether the shoulders are balanced, whether one shoulder blade is higher than the other, whether the hips are uneven, or if clothing sags on one side. The space between the arms and torso on both sides should also be relatively symmetrical.
Another simple check is to have the child bend over with their legs together and arms relaxed. If you notice an unusual bulge in one side of their back or a deviation in the spine, parents should take the child to see a doctor.
In addition, children who frequently complain of back pain after sitting for long periods, have an uneven posture, or wear ill-fitting clothes may also be signs to watch out for.
Doctors advise that when abnormalities are detected, parents should not attempt self-treatment at home but should take their children to a specialized facility for examination and X-ray imaging if necessary. Early detection improves treatment effectiveness, limits spinal deformities, and ensures the child's overall development.
