Doctors at the Intensive Care Unit 1 of Hoa Binh General Hospital ( Phu Tho province ) have successfully treated a 49-year-old patient suffering from respiratory failure, pneumonia, and multiple organ failure due to scrub typhus.
Patient H. (49 years old, Trung Thanh commune, Thanh Hoa province) was admitted to the hospital in a state of shock, multiple organ failure, pneumonia, bilateral pleural effusion, liver damage, and acute kidney failure. According to family members, about a week before admission, the patient had a high fever, fatigue, and general body aches. Subsequently, the patient experienced continuous fever, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and diarrhea, but fever-reducing medication did not improve the condition. After one day of treatment at a local medical facility without improvement, the patient was transferred to Hoa Binh General Hospital.
After examination and necessary tests, doctors diagnosed the patient with respiratory failure and pneumonia caused by scrub typhus and quickly implemented intensive resuscitation measures. Thanks to timely treatment, the patient has overcome the critical condition.
According to Dr. Hoang Cong Tinh, Head of Intensive Care Unit 1, scrub typhus is an acute infectious disease commonly seen in summer, autumn, and the rainy season. If not diagnosed and treated early, the disease can quickly lead to multiple organ failure and death.
Doctors say the bacteria that cause scrub typhus are transmitted through mite larvae that parasitize rodents such as rats, birds, or poultry. People who frequently work in gardens, fields, or mountainous forest areas are at a higher risk of contracting the disease.
To prevent the disease, people should wear protective clothing and cover their bodies completely when working in areas with lots of grass and bushes. If they experience prolonged fever, fatigue, or notice ulcers suspected to be caused by mite bites, they should go to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment to avoid dangerous complications.
