The muddy liquid that sprayed up and flooded the street was identified as being caused by a tunnel boring machine for the Nhon - Hanoi Station metro line.

The incident occurred at alley number 7, Giang Van Minh Street (Ba Dinh district) at approximately 4 PM on February 20th.

Despite residents and some construction workers covering the affected areas with tarpaulins and bricks , the liquid gushing from below to the surface did not decrease, and even spread.

By over 5 PM, the sprayed liquids had submerged an entire section of the street in Alley 7, Giang Van Minh Street.

At this time, construction units and contractors of the Nhon - Hanoi Station metro project came to inspect the situation. By then, the liquid had risen to a level of 20 to 30 cm. Some residents had to use plastic tarpaulins to block the water from seeping into their homes.

In some sections of Alley 7, Giang Van Minh Street, the liquid has overflowed and risen high; traffic there has been temporarily blocked.

As of 11 PM last night, according to reporters' observations, the spraying of liquid onto the road surface in some areas of alley number 7, Giang Van Minh Street, was still ongoing. Representatives from the investor, the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board, and the construction units were present and on standby to handle the incident.

To prevent the liquid from spraying and splashing into people's homes, construction units have mobilized many tarpaulins and cardboard sheets to cover and seal areas where liquid is still being sprayed.

Late last night, at a location in alley number 7, Giang Van Minh Street, liquid continued to surge upwards, pushing through tarpaulins and bricks placed on top. Fearing that the liquid might spray strongly and rise, potentially flooding houses like it did this afternoon, many residents living in alley number 7, Giang Van Minh Street, stayed awake on the night of February 20th as a precaution. At midnight, almost every house in the affected area had its lights on, both inside and outside.

According to reports, at approximately 4 PM on February 20th, during the tunnel boring machine TBM1's underground section of the Nhon - Hanoi Station urban railway project, tunnel boring additives (a type of mud) were ejected to the surface in the area of Alley 7, Giang Van Minh Street (Ba Dinh District).

At the scene of the incident, the erupting substance was a dark yellow liquid. After being pushed to the surface, the liquid spread throughout the neighborhood, rising to a height of about 20-30 cm. In some houses with low foundations, the liquid seeped inside, creating unsanitary conditions.

In a statement regarding the incident that same evening, the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB - the investor) confirmed that the liquid that surfaced was due to a tunnel boring additive leaking out during the tunnel boring process using a TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) on the underground section of the project.

When the incident occurred, the investor and contractor inspected the site and initially determined that the cause was likely due to the presence of old underground wells or drainage pipes that created a pathway for the drilling additive to seep to the surface (these old wells and pipes are no longer in use).
