How long does it take to recover muscles through training?

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên03/01/2025

Muscle loss during a break from gym workouts is a phenomenon where muscles decrease in size due to stopping or reducing the intensity of training for an extended period.

Muscle loss leads to decreased muscle strength. The first sign of muscle loss is a reduction in muscle mass. Most muscle groups will shrink after a long break from the gym, according to the health website Healthline (USA).

Regular training and sufficient muscle stimulation will help to restore muscle mass lost during periods of inactivity more quickly.

People who have lost muscle mass will also notice a decrease in their strength when performing everyday physical activities, such as lifting heavy objects or climbing stairs. Muscles also become softer, less firm, and the percentage of fat in the muscles increases.

Regular exercise at the appropriate intensity will help restore or even increase muscle mass. However, how long it takes for muscle mass to recover depends on many factors.

You should go to the gym at least 3-4 times a week.

To restore muscle mass, experts recommend exercising at least 3-4 times a week. Each session should last at least 45 minutes to an hour, or even longer. Exercises should be strength training exercises that build muscle, such as weightlifting, pull-ups, or squats. Focus should be on large muscle groups like the chest, back, legs, and abs.

Besides training, diet and recovery are very important. For good muscle growth, gym-goers need to consume 1.6 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. If a person weighs 50 kg, they need to consume 80 to 110 grams of protein per day.

One thing to note is that those who exercise need a proper diet, eating enough nutrients to ensure health and fitness. Exercise increases the intensity of physical activity throughout the day, meaning the body burns more calories. If you don't consume enough calories, it will be difficult to provide enough energy to develop muscle mass.

Getting enough sleep is crucial for muscle recovery. Those who exercise should aim for 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night. Additionally, it's essential to listen to your body. If you feel excessively tired or sore to the point of discomfort, reduce the intensity of your workout, avoid lifting heavy weights, or even take a few days off.

Trying to exercise while fatigued not only hinders muscle growth but also carries a risk of injury. Serious injuries can take weeks to recover from, or even require surgery, according to Healthline .
