A fire spread to a plastic pipe when burning straw got out of control.
At around 1:30 p.m. on March 6, a fire broke out on National Highway 61C, near Muong Lo Bridge, in Hamlet 7, Vi Trung Commune, Vi Thuy District, and spread to two large plastic pipes placed close to the roadside, caused by uncontrolled burning of straw.
Specifically, that afternoon, a resident burned straw in his field, and when he saw that it had almost burned out, he went home. A short while later, the fire flared up again and spread to the grass near the roadside, causing two plastic pipes placed nearby to burn. When they discovered the fire, many people used tools to put it out, but failed, so they called the province's professional fire fighting force to handle it.
“At first, when the plastic pipe was discovered on fire, about 5 people used water sprayers and tree branches to put out the fire. However, the fire spread very strongly into the plastic pipe. If the province’s professional fire fighting force had not arrived in time, it could have spread to the people’s electrical wires,” said a local resident.
In addition to the spread of fire due to loss of control, burning straw also affects traffic order and safety, potentially causing traffic accidents on some road sections. Accordingly, recently, on National Highway 61C and Provincial Road 931B, after harvesting winter-spring rice, many people burned straw, causing thick smoke, affecting the visibility of drivers participating in traffic.
“Sometimes, when I pass through roads where people burn straw, I have to turn on my headlights or stop for a while before continuing because of the thick smoke,” said Nguyen Ngoc Tri, from Nang Mau town, Vi Thuy district.
Similar to straw, burning grass and garbage during the hot, dry season also poses a high risk of spreading and causing large fires. For example, at around 12:00 on March 9, 2024, a fire broke out in a mixed garden of about 2,000m2 along Provincial Road 925, in Dong Thanh Commune, Chau Thanh District.
The cause of the fire was due to a person burning grass out of control. Upon hearing the news, the province's professional firefighting force sent forces and equipment to extinguish the fire, otherwise the consequences would have been unpredictable, because there were many houses nearby.
Lieutenant Colonel Le Hung Cuong, Head of the Fire Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Police Department, Provincial Police, said that in order to minimize the number of fires caused by burning grass and straw, the unit will strengthen many preventive measures. In particular, coordinating with functional agencies and localities to propagate and guide people to properly implement regulations on fire prevention and fighting with the motto "prevention is the key".
The fire prevention, fire fighting and rescue police force is equipped with vehicles and equipment; on duty 24/7. At the same time, regularly inspect and maintain existing on-site fire prevention and fire fighting equipment, such as: fire pumps, nozzles, fire hoses, and fire extinguishers of all kinds.
“When people burn straw, they need to pay attention to measures to prevent the spread of fire, such as assigning people to guard it; when starting to burn, they need to choose the wind direction, avoid burning at noon, when it is hot; when burning, they need to create distance from other areas with materials that are difficult to burn by creating trenches on the field, cleaning the border areas between where it needs to be burned and where it does not need to be burned, as well as preparing the necessary tools to extinguish the fire if it spreads,” Lieutenant Colonel Le Hung Cuong advised.
When burning trash or dry grass, people need to divide into small groups or cut into trenches, then sprinkle water around to prevent the fire from spreading and always have someone watching. After burning, they must actively put out all the embers before leaving to avoid the fire from igniting again and spreading.
“If a fire spreads, promptly implement the 4-on-the-spot principle: “command, forces, means, supplies and on-site logistics”. Then, call the province’s professional firefighting force to come to the rescue,” Colonel Le Hung Cuong further advised.
It is currently the hot and dry season, the fire and explosion situation is quite complicated, so everyone needs to raise awareness and be proactive in preventing burning straw and dry grass to avoid unfortunate consequences.
