| Canada (in black) entered the 2026 World Cup with an unbeaten record in friendly matches. |
Canada continued to demonstrate their serious preparation for the 2026 World Cup by drawing 1-1 with the Republic of Ireland in their latest international friendly. Despite the absence of their star player Alphonso Davies, the co-hosts played confidently and maintained their unbeaten record in the run-up to the world's biggest tournament.
Entering their final World Cup-preparatory friendly match against the Republic of Ireland, Canada showed incredibly thorough preparation, with coach Jesse Marsch's team having just secured a convincing 2-0 victory against Uzbekistan a few days earlier.
With the advantage of playing at home and a relaxed mindset, Canada launched an attack from the very first minutes and soon took the lead after a somewhat unlucky own goal by Jake O'Brien. The Republic of Ireland defender could do nothing more after Stephen Eustáquio's clever corner kick.
The remaining minutes saw Canada continue to dominate, with the World Cup co-hosts controlling most of the game and creating numerous dangerous opportunities towards the visitors' goal. However, the turning point came in the 60th minute when Cyle Larin fouled a Republic of Ireland player with a high tackle inside the penalty area. From the penalty spot, although Troy Parrott missed the first penalty, Chiedozie Ogbene was in the right place at the right time to tap the ball in, equalizing for the visitors.
The remaining minutes saw an exciting back-and-forth battle between the two sides, creating numerous dangerous opportunities. However, thanks to an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Crépeau of Canada, the visiting team's strikers were unable to score any more goals, and they had to settle for a 1-1 draw. This is considered a respectable result for Canada, especially since the Republic of Ireland is on an unbeaten run, having previously troubled both the Czech Republic and Portugal in recent matches.
Although they couldn't beat the Republic of Ireland in their final friendly match before the World Cup, overall, Jesse Marsch's team completed their preparations with an unbeaten record and considerable confidence going into the tournament.
Throughout its history, Canada has never won a single World Cup match. Fans of the team... There are high expectations that this generation of players can achieve extraordinary feats, especially with world- class star Alphonso Davies in their squad.
The Bayern Munich star is still recovering from a hamstring injury sustained while playing for his club last month. Previously, Davies admitted his chances of featuring in the opening match against Bosnia & Herzegovina on June 12th were very low. However, in his latest statement, the 25-year-old defender left open the possibility of playing if his recovery goes smoothly.
“The first match is fast approaching. We understand its importance, but we also have to prioritize the recovery process. If things go well in the coming days, let's see. If not, there's no reason to rush,” Davies shared.
The return of captain Alphonso Davies will undoubtedly be a huge boost for Canada, as the team aims to advance from the group stage at the World Cup held on home soil. In Group B, Canada will have to compete for a place in the next round against the highly-rated Swiss team, and other opponents including Bosnia & Herzegovina and Qatar.
Canada's World Cup campaign will begin with a clash against Bosnia & Herzegovina in Toronto on June 12th. After that, coach Jesse Marsch's team will travel to Vancouver to play against Qatar and Switzerland. This is considered a relatively easy schedule, and Canada has a good chance of advancing if they capitalize on their opportunities and avoid significant mistakes.
