On the afternoon of May 23, at a meeting with Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam Shawn Perry Steil, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha affirmed that Vietnam attaches great importance to and appreciates the friendly cooperative relationship with Canada. Especially, with the potential for cooperation in many fields, after 5 years of establishing diplomatic relations and 50 years of establishing the Comprehensive Partnership, the relationship between the two countries has been raised to a new height.
Currently, bilateral trade turnover between the two countries will reach 7 billion USD in 2022. Canada is Vietnam's second largest trading partner in the Americas. Vietnam is Canada's largest trading partner in Southeast Asia.
The Deputy Prime Minister said that the two sides need to continue to make better use of the advantages of being members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Vietnam is ready to be a gateway for Canada to expand trade and investment in Southeast Asia.
Expressing his impression with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's initiative and determination in achieving the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40-50% by 2030, especially the challenge of building a global carbon pricing mechanism, etc., the Deputy Prime Minister said that without carbon pricing to form a global carbon trading market, it would be very difficult to generate financial resources to specific net zero greenhouse gas emission reduction solutions (net zero).
The Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated Canada's positive actions within the framework of implementing the Fair Energy Transition Agreement (JETP) of the Group of 7 industrialized countries (G7) and international partners to which Vietnam also participates; said that the two countries need to promote a typical cooperation model in energy transformation.
Supporting Canada's global initiative in ocean plastic waste treatment, the Deputy Prime Minister said that Vietnam is actively exchanging and cooperating with the World Bank and Japan to promote the formation of a global legal agreement on ocean waste management, focusing on sharing skills and technologies for waste treatment and control at source in parallel with pollution treatment at sea.
The Deputy Prime Minister believes that through forums and multilateral cooperation mechanisms, the two countries will continue to expand bilateral cooperation in many fields; We hope that Canada will continue to share lessons learned, support Vietnam in green and sustainable development, and implement net zero.
Thanking the Deputy Prime Minister for taking the time to meet, Ambassador Shawn Perry Steil said that the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations and the 5th anniversary of the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership is a time for the two countries to look back on the successes achieved and a foundation for the future.
Ambassador Shawn Perry Steil said that Vietnam has made many commitments with initiatives and efforts to respond to climate change, and has achieved positive results. Therefore, Canada is ready to support Vietnam in terms of techniques, technology, governance, mobilizing resources to realize the goals of climate change response, energy transition, net zero, forming a carbon credit market...; At the same time, he wishes to continue promoting cooperation in areas where Canada has advantages such as clean technology, clean energy, energy production other than coal power, etc.
