The elderly couple were utterly shocked when their life savings, which they thought they had hidden away very carefully, suddenly disappeared.

Although the incident happened many years ago, it has recently been repeatedly shared again on Chinese social media.

One day in April 2015, an elderly couple in Yingkou, Liaoning Province, China, went for a walk in the park near their home after dinner, as usual. However, when they returned home, they found their house in disarray. Upon entering their bedroom, they discovered that even the space under the bed had been removed, and all of their savings—1.6 million yuan (approximately 5.6 billion VND)—had vanished.

Upon receiving a report from residents, the police quickly arrived at the scene to investigate the incident. Witnessing the disappearance of their entire life's savings, the wife was so shocked she almost fainted. People had to help her up and reassure her to calm her down.

The elderly woman was so shocked she could barely stand after the incident.

However, what surprised everyone was why the couple, who seemed to come from an ordinary family, kept such a large amount of cash in their house. Police later investigated and confirmed that they did indeed possess 1.6 million yuan.

According to verification, the husband, surnamed Liu, and the wife, surnamed Wang, were both businesspeople. In the late 1980s, they seized an opportunity and started a catering business. With their cooking skills and enthusiastic service, their small restaurant quickly became popular locally, and the business continued to grow.

As they grew older and their health declined, the couple found the food service industry too demanding, so they switched careers and opened a small supermarket. Although small in scale, thanks to its prime location surrounded by a large residential area, Mr. and Mrs. Luu still have a good and stable income.

For many years, they maintained the habit of saving and accumulating every penny. Even when their business was doing well, their lives remained very simple. However, due to their age and lack of technological knowledge, Mr. and Mrs. Liu were uneasy about depositing their money in the bank. Furthermore, they worried about not having cash readily available in case of illness or emergency. Finally, Mr. Liu and Mrs. Wang decided to design a cabinet under their bed to hide their cash.

Police thoroughly examined the scene and found evidence that the door lock had been professionally broken. Additionally, while the house was messy, there were few signs of forced entry, suggesting the thief likely knew where the money was hidden beforehand.

According to a witness living downstairs from Mr. Liu's apartment, on the afternoon of the incident, he saw two unfamiliar men walking down the hallway and occasionally looking upstairs. This clue immediately attracted the attention of the police. They quickly extracted surveillance video from a nearby intersection and discovered a man acting suspiciously.

Police are thoroughly reviewing surveillance camera footage to search for the suspect.

Through investigation, the police finally identified the main suspect in the case as Khang Nang Vu, 38 years old, with a history of theft. This time, Khang Nang Vu also had an accomplice, his nephew Khang Vinh Cat, who is only 22 years old.

Prior to the incident, Khang Nang Vu was being relentlessly pursued by creditors but was unable to pay. Having accidentally discovered that Mr. and Mrs. Luu were hiding a large amount of cash in their house, he began to hatch a plan to steal it.

After identifying the suspects, the police immediately launched a manhunt, but Kang Nengwu and Kang Yongji had split up to escape. Kang Nengwu fled to Baotou City, Inner Mongolia; while Kang Yongji hid in a small village in Yingkou, Liaoning Province.

Authorities mobilized police forces from across the country to assist in the search. Finally, after 7 days since the incident, they apprehended both Khang Nang Vu and Khang Vinh Cat.

Khang Nang Vu was arrested for stealing 1.6 million yuan from Mr. and Mrs. Liu.

Mr. and Mrs. Liu and Wang were reimbursed most of the money, as Kang Nengwu and Kang Yongji had only taken a small amount for their expenses. Through this incident, they also learned a valuable lesson about managing money. With the persuasion of the police and family members, the elderly couple finally agreed to deposit the money in the bank, no longer keeping large amounts of cash at home.

This incident caused a stir in the local community at the time and served as a warning to everyone. Chinese police reminded people to raise their awareness of safety and financial management to avoid falling into the same situation as Mr. and Mrs. Liu, because it's not always possible to recover lost money.
