Carragher calls Salah a 'disgrace'

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher launched a fierce counterattack, focusing on Mohamed Salah's ego and the timing he chose to attack the team.

Salah is being criticized.

Jamie Carragher did not shy away. After nearly two days of silence over Mohamed Salah's shocking comments at Elland Road, the former Liverpool midfielder went on Monday Night Football and launched one of the most vitriolic criticisms of English football in recent years.

Carragher bluntly called Salah's actions "disgraceful", and from there opened a weighty dissection of the ego, role and responsibility of Liverpool's number one star.

Salah rarely strays into the mixed zone, but when he does, Carragher says, it’s “deliberately scripted.” So the “Carragher will criticise me tomorrow” comment wasn’t just a spur-of-the-moment outburst. It was more like a signal for a public confrontation. Carragher stayed silent until the end, but that silence turned out to be a preparation for a blow.

And when he spoke, he spoke without missing a beat. Carragher stressed: Salah has every right to be upset about being on the bench. But choosing a moment when Liverpool are at their lowest point to attack coach Arne Slot is “the heaviest blow that can be dealt to the team”. He even accused Salah of wanting to “push the coach into a corner”.

Not only that, Carragher also turned to Salah's career before coming to Liverpool: "He was known as a failure at Chelsea. Not a big star. And has not won anything significant with the Egyptian national team." The message is clear: Salah is great because of Liverpool, and he needs to remember that.

Carragher also mentioned the eight years the Liverpool full-back had to carry the entire defensive front behind Salah: “He said other people threw him under the bus, but he let his team-mates suffer that for a long time.”

When asked if he was a “Salah critic”, Carragher fired back. He has never attacked the 33-year-old’s form, defensive ability or selfishness. On the contrary, he has always defended Salah against excessive criticism this season.

But “I will speak up when Salah thinks he has the right to throw the club under the bus.” That is a line that Carragher does not allow anyone to cross, not even the biggest legend of the Klopp era.

The Salah-Carragher spat reflects the turmoil at Liverpool post-Klopp. Slot has not built a foundation, the team no longer has the spirit of a European champion, and the biggest star has chosen the worst time to ignite a new fire.

Carragher may be harsh, but his point is clear: Liverpool cannot cope with the crisis if those in charge put ego before team.

When a legend has to stand up and reiterate core values, it means Liverpool are facing a problem that goes much deeper than a draw against Leeds.
