Neither Kylian Mbappe nor Erling Haaland have taken the top spot; it's currently held by Australian defender Jordan Bos. According to statistics from the first round of matches, Bos reached a top speed of 36.7 km/h, making him the fastest player at the 2026 World Cup so far.
This achievement helps the "Socceroos" full-back surpass a number of famous attacking stars known for their acceleration. This is considered a big surprise, as Bos is not a name often mentioned in the list of the world's fastest players.
Right behind him is Erling Haaland with a speed of 36.5 km/h. The Norwegian striker showed impressive acceleration in the 4-1 victory against Iraq. His Manchester City teammate, Abdukodir Khusanov, also reached a similar speed.
In the following positions, Mohamed Toure of Australia ranked fourth with 35.8 km/h, while Ryan Gravenberch of the Netherlands and Alan Minda of Ecuador both reached 35.6 km/h. On the England side, Djed Spence was the fastest player with 35.2 km/h, the same as Son Heung-min of South Korea.
Notably, Mbappe only finished ninth with a speed of 35.1 km/h, lower than expected for one of the world's top runners.
The race at the 2026 World Cup is still long, with the group stage only just beginning. With numerous matches ahead, the stars still have plenty of opportunities to improve their performance.
