Tension hung over Barcelona ahead of the first leg of the Champions League quarter-final after the Atletico Madrid bus was attacked on its way to the Nou Camp.
Some home fans threw bottles and other objects at the visiting team's vehicle, causing a window to shatter.
According to reports, the incident occurred outside the stadium, where a large number of Barcelona fans had gathered early. Despite a heavy police presence and escort vehicles, the crowd still managed to reach the bus and cause damage.
Fortunately, no Atletico Madrid players or staff members were injured in the incident. However, the image of the bus with its shattered windows clearly reflects the level of hostility ahead of a major match.
This isn't the first time Atletico has faced a similar situation in Barcelona. Previously, in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final last month, their team bus was also attacked. Atletico lost 0-3 in that match but still advanced to the final thanks to their 4-0 first-leg victory.
The organizers erected barricades along the route near the stadium to limit contact between fans and the visiting team. However, these security measures could not completely prevent unruly behavior. In addition to bottles, an unlit flare was also thrown towards the convoy.
Coach Hansi Flick admitted he had anticipated the heated atmosphere. This match took place just days after the two teams met in La Liga, where Barcelona won 2-1.
"The Champions League is the ultimate competition. Everyone wants to perform and win," Flick said.
Despite facing immense psychological pressure, Atletico secured a crucial 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Julian Alvarez and Alexander Sorloth. Barca suffered a setback at the end of the first half when Pau Cubarsi was sent off and were unable to turn the tide.
