According to Android Authority , in an interview, Satya Nadella discussed various topics related to his life, Microsoft, AI (artificial intelligence), and his business dealings over the years. One of the questions he answered in the interview concerned, "Are there any real strategic mistakes or just wrong decisions that you regret looking back on?"
Mr. Nadella regrets the mistakes that led to the failure of Windows Phone.
Mr. Nadella provided an answer regarding his company's withdrawal from the mobile phone market. The Microsoft head believed that Windows Phone had a chance of success, but ultimately he made a wrong decision.
"The decision that I think is often mentioned and one of the most difficult I made as CEO was our abandonment of what I would call the mobile phone as defined at the time. Looking back, I think there could have been many ways we could have made it successful by reinventing the computing category between PCs, tablets, and phones," Nadella shared.
When Nadella took over Microsoft from Steve Ballmer, one of his first moves was to acquire Nokia's phone business for $7.6 billion. The company then went on to create Windows Phone, but just a few years after the acquisition, the company admitted that Windows Phone had failed.
Since then, the company has launched the Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 – foldable devices running on the Android platform. There were rumors earlier this year that Microsoft had actually finalized the design for a third version of the Surface Duo; however, the company later reportedly abandoned this design in favor of a more traditional foldable screen.
