The two nights of Phu Quang's concerts , "Fragments of Memories Suddenly Appear" (December 7-8), at the Hanoi Grand Opera House, take their name from the title of his memoir published in 2016, which evokes the greatest memory of him: music .

Among them, the concerto "Love of the Sea" is perhaps the greatest shared memory between composer Phu Quang and the packed audience. They had almost all experienced their youth with his music, especially since this piece was regularly played weekly on Vietnam Radio .

Singer Ha Tran has been performing Phu Quang's music since she was a student.

Throughout the program, those who sang Phu Quang's music shared memories of their many years working with him. For singer Tan Minh, whose talent was discovered by the composer himself and who received his songs in 1990, those were long, warm days when he was "the most cherished by composer Phu Quang," as his colleagues called him.

For singer Ha Tran, her memories of composer Phu Quang include her first performance with him while studying at the Hanoi Conservatory of Music; the many times she couldn't fly back to Vietnam to do shows with him; and this time, she had the opportunity to perform some of his lesser-known songs…

Ha Tran shared her thoughts on the song "Sadness" : "I had never heard this song before, until my family showed me a video of singer Ho Ngoc Ha during rehearsals for the show. Perhaps it's one of the lesser-known songs by composer Phu Quang, yet it has a beautiful and lovely melody. It reminds me of his song ' Simple Things '. They both have a bright, clear major key."

Singer Siu Black displayed both intensity and gentleness when singing Phu Quang's music.

Returning to the Hanoi Opera House after many years, singer Siu Black revealed that she also felt hesitant when she wanted to sing Phu Quang's music.

"The nightingale of the mountains and forests" often thought she wasn't suited to the gentleness in his songs. He himself sometimes jokingly worried that Siu Black singing Phu Quang's songs would sound like Nguyen Cuong or Pho Duc Phuong.

"But then, Quang said there was a song he thought would suit me, if I wanted to sing it," Siu Black recalled. That sad rock song was also one of Siu Black's performances in "Fragments of Memories Suddenly Appear ."

The love of the sea, as expressed through the music of People's Artist Bui Cong Duy, has the nuance of experience and empathy between two men in a family.

But on the first night of the performance, the most significant piece of memory, a family memory through music, was the piano and violin duet "Love of the Sea" performed by composer Phu Quang's daughter, artist Trinh Huong, and son-in-law Bui Cong Duy.

The piece was originally written by composer Phu Quang for flutist Hong Nhung.   his wife. Listeners, already familiar with the concerto "Love of the Sea" with its flute solos, now get to hear those same passages played on the deep, resonant violin of Bui Cong Duy.

These solo pieces evoke the sharing of affection, love, and trust among the men of the same family.

Artists Trinh Huong and Bui Cong Duy thank those who love the music of composer Phu Quang.

"This is a very famous song associated with the names of my mother Nhung and father Quang. This year, my mother also passed away, following in my father's footsteps. On this night, the song is performed as a tribute to the love my parents gave us, and we want to express it again with our own emotions, in a new way," artist Trinh Huong shared about "The Love of the Sea ."

The diverse colors within the same "Love of the Sea ," the vibrant melodies of many lesser-known works, the years of experience singing Phu Quang's music by various vocalists… All these elements contribute to the musical legacy of composer Phu Quang possessing a beauty that is both familiar and romantic, yet very down-to-earth and relatable.

The balanced repertoire, featuring new voices, established singers, familiar songs, and new songs that quickly felt relatable, created a sense of intimacy and shared connection. Like a family gathering.
